School Profile

Mission
Our mission is to offer a world-class education that will enable our diverse community of students to function successfully, both academically and socially, in the global community.  This is to be accomplished within our school culture of shared responsibility between students, parents and staff.

School and Community    In September of 2001, Island Academy International opened its doors to its first students. The founders envisioned an educational institution, which would provide high quality education to the children of Antigua and to address the economic and social inequalities which often prevent many of the island’s deserving children access to world-class education. Today, this premier academic institution has been successful in providing high quality education to the children of Antigua serving students from both the local and expatriate community. This vision realized, IA has  evolved into a diverse multinational and socioeconomic environment. Our students learn to value diversity, and respect cultural and socioeconomic differences.

Student Body   Island Academy International comprises of close to 300 students, from the Kindergarten year up to the IB Diploma Program. The diverse student body represents over 20 nations with students drawn from varying socioeconomic backgrounds.

Faculty The academic atmosphere at Island Academy International draws from a highly qualified instructional staff who truly seeks to further our mission. Collectively, our staff brings in excess of 250 years of teaching experience. They are constantly striving to make our school the best it can be. A team of dedicated teachers with experience drawn from around the world our faculty seek to nurture and develop not only intellect, but character, instilling in every student ideas about self-sufficiency, responsibility and life-long learning so they may succeed far beyond the boundaries of our campus at Oliver’s Estate.

Accreditation and Memberships   The Island Academy international school is accredited as a K-13 school with the Antigua and Barbuda Ministry of Education and as an International Baccalaureate World School.

Curriculum

Primary (K-6)    At the primary level, for students ages 5 to 11 years, our academic program draws on aspects of international and national curricula. Children are placed in homeroom groupings, or grades, in the care of a homeroom teacher and receive instruction in all of the core subject areas - Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies, and Science. Music, Art, Spanish and PE are taught by specialist teachers. .

Secondary (7-11)   The Secondary curriculum prepares students for the regional Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams administered and assessed by the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). The curriculum from grade to grade evolves with an increasingly focused attention given to in-depth subject knowledge, research abilities, self-motivated learning techniques and community service. At CSEC level students take seven compulsory subjects consisting of English A, English B, Math, Biology, Spanish, Physical Education (PE) and Information Technology (IT). Students can then choose additional subjects such as Music, Chemistry, Physics and Principles of Business (PoB).

International Baccalaureate Program (IB)   In 2009 Island Academy joined the group of select schools around the world offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, a final two-year course of study recognized as the leader in international education. As quoted by the International Baccalaureate Organization, “the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme fosters the knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable students to excel in university”. Students may choose to do the full IB Program, receiving an IB Diploma or opt for the IB certificate program with individual courses of their choosing.
