Job overview

New Horizons Bexley is a federation of two SEMH schools, Aspire Academy Bexley (primary), Endeavour Academy Bexley (secondary) and the alternative provision service, Horizons Academy Bexley.  All three schools have recently joined London South East Academies Trust (LSEAT) having worked together for a number of years as a hard federation.  Our schools provide education for pupils from Year 1 to Year 11 as well as working closely with our stakeholders in creating solutions for pupils at risk of permanent exclusion and, within our SEMH schools, for pupils who have Education Health Care Plans.

Due to recent expansion of our two special schools, we are now seeking to appoint a SENCo to coordinate our intervention programmes, oversee the annual review process, support staff in their teaching and monitor the impact of our interventions against the EHCP targets.  The post holder will also have responsibility for coordinating the transition programme between our two SEMH schools.

This is an opportunity for an experienced and skilled practitioner to make a real difference to children’s lives.  A proven background in managing challenging behaviour alongside evidence of securing successful academic outcomes are essential requirements.  The post will be based across two sites and offer the opportunity to work across key stages from Year 1 to Year 11.

If you have enthusiasm, commitment and a desire to work with some of the most vulnerable and complex young people in our community, we would welcome your application.  High aspirations and a relentless approach towards excellence are the key skills we are looking for along with evidence of previous outstanding classroom teaching.

This post is considered to be a customer-facing position; as such it falls within scope of the Code of Practice on English language requirement for public sector workers.  The school  therefore has a statutory duty under Part 7 of the Immigration Act 2016 to ensure that post holders have a command of spoken English sufficient for the effective performance of the job requirements. The appropriate standards are set out in the person specification. These will be applied during the recruitment/selection and probationary stages.

About Horizons Academy Bexley

Horizons provides high quality support to pupils in Key Stages 1–4 who have been permanently excluded (or are at risk of exclusion) from mainstream school.

We focus on early intervention, offering a range of services from short term respite to longer term education for students in KS4. Our expert team works intensively with post-16 pupils to secure destinations whilst providing ongoing support. This helps ensure that all pupils can maintain their educational placements, training programmes and/or employment.

Our aim in Key Stages 1–3 is to re-integrate pupils back into a mainstream or specialist school via our ‘Refocus programme’. We work closely with external agencies and our partner schools to identify the needs of the child and develop the child’s own ability to learn, so that they feel confident about being in the classroom.

We have created an environment and developed a curriculum which supports our pupils to become well rounded citizens and able to productively contribute to the community. We want all our young people to feel confident about their future and in their own ability to live a successful, meaningful life.
