Mt Richmond Special School in Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city are looking for an exceptional special education teacher to join their team in a well-resourced and supportive school.

With your relevant experience and training you will work with a small group of teenagers with high needs Autism who have a programme based on life skills. Over time you will assume some leadership support for other classes with a high number of students with Autism and will be a member of the schools Organisational Lead Teachers’ group. This is your chance to grow a leadership role using your specialist skills in working with students with Autism as well as coaching and monitoring other teachers.

Mount Richmond Special School is comprised of 10 classes with 7 satellite classes located in mainstream schools around Auckland. Facilities include a music therapy room, woodwork room, horticultural area, covered playground and a sensory garden. Classrooms are well equipped with interactive whiteboards or smart TV’s and computers are available for the students. One Deputy Principal and three Assistant Principals are fully released to support staff and students across the school supporting class programmes, coaching, and mentoring teachers and ensuring that both the adapted New Zealand Curriculum and specialised programmes are implemented and monitored.

The successful candidate will:

  • hold a recognised initial teacher education qualification (required);
  • hold a qualification in special education (desirable);
  • have relevant experience teaching students with challenging behaviour and complex learning needs.


You may be eligible for a $5000 overseas relocation grant from the Ministry of Education if you take up a teaching position in New Zealand before the 1 July 2019. Now is a great time to come and teach in Aotearoa!
