Job overview

Come and make a positive difference to learners on the Isle of Man with a disability.

Are you passionate about delivering excellent practice and providing high quality education to children with special educational needs (SEN)?

We are looking for a knowledgeable and motivated leader who can support our Director of Inclusion and Safeguarding to set the strategic direction for SEN provision for children with disabilities on the Isle of Man.

How does this role make an impact?

Within this role you will have the unique opportunity to make a difference and leave a lasting legacy by shaping the special educational needs provisions for the island.

As the island does not have a special educational needs school, you will have the opportunity to work with our dedicated teams across all phases of education and with schools across the island, supporting them in managing intervention strategies and with addressing the needs of individual pupils.

There is no average day in this role and a typical working week provides real variety; it could see you advising SEN units in both our primary and secondary schools, working with other agencies and children’s therapy services to ensure effective resources are provided for children with SEN, to working with senior colleagues in the Department to develop the SEN framework and code of practice. Your week could also include representing the Department at business sector groups and monitoring the quality and impact of SEN services.

Why join us?

In return, we can offer you a competitive salary and annual leave entitlement, along with a rewarding pension scheme. We also offer flexible working opportunities and a flexi-time system.

Within the Department of Education, Sport and Culture, learning and development is important to us and we endeavour to support your own learning, development and career aspirations. With our own dedicated learning and development facilities you will have access to a wide variety of courses, such as leadership, management as well as role specific training.

The Island is a special place to live and work and those living on the island can benefit from a great work-life balance.

It is the ideal place to live and work, combining breath-taking unspoiled scenery, superb leisure facilities, with excellent air and sea links to the UK and Ireland. We have numerous events, clubs and societies in almost everything you can imagine, from cycling to sailing and kayaking to horse riding. The Island offers a high quality family and individual lifestyle in an environment that has a low crime rate and provides a first class education.

The Island enjoys a favourable basic rate of income tax (10% min 20% max) and generous rates of personal allowance. With a buoyant economy, vibrant towns and miles of beautiful open countryside, the Isle of Man has something for everyone.

If you think you would relish both the challenges and opportunities this role can offer and would enjoy working with a team who are committed to doing their best for children with special educational needs, then this could be the perfect role for you.

What do you need to succeed in this role?

You will need to hold qualified teacher status and have experience of delivering high quality provision for pupils with profound and/or multiple learning difficulties and of developing individual programmes to support children with SEN.
We are looking for someone who can help drive the Department forward, so you will need the ability to think strategically and formulate a vision for the service.

Building great working relationships with our wider team will be a key part of achieving success in this role, so you will need to have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
