22.5hrs, 39 weeks of the year, core hours 8:30am to 4/5pm

Devon Children's Services specialises in high quality residential and educational provisions for children between 7-18 who may have SEMH, Speech, language and communication needs and Autism. The safeguarding and wellbeing of our young people who may have experienced challenges in their lives is always paramount; along with encouragement to achieve their full potential.

Devon Children's Services currently have two educational settings, Quay View School and Tor View School, and four Children's Homes in Tavistock, Gunnislake and Okehampton.

We are looking for an experienced Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) who will be able to support educational achievement by leading and coordinating SEN provision for our students, all of whom have special educational needs.

You will need to be a qualified, experienced teacher with a passion for supporting pupils with special educational needs. You must hold the National Award for Special Educational Needs Coordination (NASENCO).

Working closely with the headteachers at both schools, the Head of Therapy and the Well-being Team, you will use your leadership skills to manage SEN provision and to provide support to other teachers. Experience of working with students with complex sensory needs and autism is essential.

The successful candidate must have good written and spoken communication skills, good interpersonal skills and be able to work well within a staff team. In addition to working with pupils, parents and teachers, the administrative responsibilities of the role are significant, IT skills are essential.  You will need to balance your work between both schools.

As SENCO you will:

• develop and oversee the implementation of the school's SEN strategy and policy
• take responsibility for ensuring EHCPs are appropriate and facilitated within both schools.
• lead EHCP annual reviews in both schools
• carry out assessments of students to identify needs and monitor progress - including observations in the classroom and meeting with teachers, parents and other professionals
• work with classroom teachers, the school leadership team, parents and relevant external agencies to develop, implement and monitor individual support/learning plans
• make referrals and liaise with professionals within and outside of the two schools - this could include psychologists, health and social care providers and CAMHs
• manage and advise on resources for SEN provision
• analyse school data to develop appropriate strategies and interventions
• keep up to date with national and local policies related to SEN
