Rossendale is a school catering for the needs of pupils who display social, emotional and mental health difficulties and whose learning disability may be affected by an Autism Spectrum Disorder. All pupils have a draft or final Education, Health and Care Plan  

The School provides education for young people aged from 7 – 18 years of age.  Key stages 2, 3 and 4 are based on the main school site, whilst Key stage 5 have a specialist sixth form building based in the local community. At Key stage 4 and 5 we offer a wide range of GCSE subjects, BTEC Awards, Functional Skills, ASDAN and Entry Level qualifications. We currently want to expand A level courses at the sixth form provision. Given the disrupted nature of our pupils’ education, prior to their admission to Rossendale, we have had some outstanding examination results. The school admits boys and girls on both daily and residential placements. 

The post is required as school is expanding and will be for a period of no less than 12 months. 

As a Special Support Assistant:

  • You will work under the direction of one of our Assistant Head teachers.
  • You will be expected to ensure that pupils’ special educational needs are being addressed, having due regard for the School's philosophy and policies. 
  • You will be expected to meet individual needs and ensure that all pupils achieve their academic potential.


Rossendale School has an excellent staff team who are enthusiastic and supportive. If you have experience of working with young people in a school setting, are flexible, imaginative and enthusiastic we would be pleased to hear from you.  Experience of working in a specialist school is not essential as the school runs its own extensive training programme.

Rossendale School was judged to be 'Outstanding' in all areas by Ofsted.

Any candidates shortlisted will be invited to attend a informal interview day on 11 February and if successful at this stage, a formal interview will be held on 12 February.

This post is a full time post  to provide specific learning support for children aged 8-18 years who have complex social, emotional and behavioural difficulties with associated autism spectrum conditions

If you have experience of working with young people in a school setting, are flexible, imaginative and enthusiastic we would be pleased to hear from you. 

Experience of working in a special school is not essential as the school runs its own extensive training programme.

Due to the nature of the role you will need to have held a full driving licence for at least 3 years.
