Contract Type:  Full time with possibility of 1 management unit for sports co-ordination.

Our client school in a rural setting of Christchurch seeks a qualified and experienced teacher to work in a special school, who has knowledge and understandings of Perceptual Motor Programme (PMP).  You will have a physical education background with an interest in special education applications and have a good understanding of working with students with trauma and how it affects brain development to implement sensory programmes around this.

The successful applicant will have the ability to design and facilitate programmes that:

  • Demonstrate an advanced understanding of instructional strategies for students with autism, developmental delay, specific learning disabilities, and behaviour disorders;
  • Manage whole-group, small-group, and individual instruction to accommodate different academic levels and learning styles; and meet the physical needs of students with learning and physical needs;
  • Help develop students sense of body awareness and sense of self and feeling ‘safe’;
  • Help develop motor skills, bilateral integration, coordination, muscle tone;
  • Create a calm purposeful learning environment for students who may need space and well-resourced support away from a conventional classroom environment;
  • Employ special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory and perceptual-motor skills, language, cognition and memory.

 

This is a full-time permanent position with the possibility of 1 Management Unit (NZ $4000) for sports coordination. The school offers education programmes for students with special needs aged 5 – 21 years catering for children with high and complex needs. The school has input from a range of specialists employed directly by the school and provide specialist programmes. All classrooms have iPads, Interactive Whiteboards, and Laptops. They are passionate about creating an Aided Language Environment for all students who require alternative and augmentative communication. The school works closely with the Talklink Organisation to trial and access equipment.

School Programmes are delivered under the NZ Curriculum Framework. Each student has a negotiated Individual Learning Programme (ILP) to ensure that they receive an education designed specifically for them. Curriculum levels range from Primary to National Certificate of Education Achievement (NCEA) Unit Standards.
