Are you looking for a new challenge? For a rewarding job where you have the opportunity to make a real difference? If so then we would love to hear from you!

The Deaf Academy operates from a £12m brand-new award-winning campus for day and residential students. This is a unique opportunity to join our fantastic team and directly impact our young people’s experience.

We are very keen to hear from SaLT professionals who may be looking for an opportunity within the exciting and highly rewarding area that is Deaf Education and/or the opportunity to relocate to Devon.

Working collaboratively with Education and Care staff and our in-house Therapies team, the successful candidate will lead a high-quality service to support deaf students with language and communication difficulties and / or additional needs. They will be involved in providing training, planning and jointly running groups. The SaLT will also work closely with Education staff to facilitate whole Academy approaches to the inclusion of students with auditory, speech, language and communication needs.

The role reports to the Assistant Principal (Therapies and Student Support) working within the therapy team, alongside colleagues such as an Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Educational Audiologist and a SaLT whom the successful candidate will be responsible for managing.

The successful applicant will possess a strong work ethic with skills of proven positive multidisciplinary working with other therapies, teachers, teaching assistants, residential staff, families/carers and external professionals. The expected standards of interventions and collaboration demand effective organisational and planning skills as well as exceptional rapport, flair and creativity as Lead SaLT.

Candidates with energy, patience, passion and full commitment to the enriching the lives of Deaf young people are warmly encouraged to apply.

BSL qualifications are important but not an essential requirement for this role as full training will be provided.

Founded in 1826, the Deaf Academy provides a school and Further Education college for Deaf young people aged 9-25, and currently has around 60 students.

We are located in Devon, but our unique provision and specialist expertise mean that students come from across the UK to attend, with many using our residential care facilities.

In September 2020 the Deaf Academy opened the doors of its new home in the vibrant seaside town of Exmouth, just a short drive or train journey from Exeter and 20 minutes from junction 30 of the M5.

Designed around the principles of inspiration, visual communication and inclusivity, this truly 21st Century Deaf school and college campus places the Academy at the cutting edge of Deaf education in Europe.

Inspired by US-developed DeafSpace architecture, light and colour permeate the Academy building, clear sightlines and wide corridors enable signers to communicate and acoustics are carefully managed. Meanwhile, large classrooms and modern therapeutic facilities are designed to complement each other and provide state of the art education for Deaf young people whatever their additional needs might be.

Our new residential accommodation is modern, well equipped and, above all, provides a true home from home for our young people. The inspiring buildings underpin our objectives to build confidence in our students, show them their value in the world and help them believe they can achieve anything they want to.

The future of Deaf education and residential care provision begins here.
