The BSN is a leading British international school with five campuses in and around The Hague. We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, experienced Speech, Language & Communication Specialist to join our Senior School Voorschoten from September 2021. The successful candidate will join a large, dynamic Additional Educational Needs (AEN) team and play a key part in providing for our students with a wide range of needs, including those with Speech, Language and Communication difficulties.

The purpose of this job is to advise and support school staff identifying and meeting the needs of children and young people with Speech Language and Communication Needs (SLCN), Autism Spectrum Condition, and/or Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD) to ensure inclusion and improved outcomes. To support the planning and assessment of children and young people with SLCN, ASC and/or SpLD, working jointly with other key professionals that may be involved with a student. To deliver intervention programmes to small groups and/or individuals.


The main duties and responsibilities of the role:

  • To contribute to the assessment of pupils, using formal assessment and observation, interpreting, evaluating and explaining the relevance of assessment outcomes in order to establish the nature of the pupils’ difficulties in relation to their performance.
  • Assist school staff in analysing the needs of young people with SLCN, ASC and/or SpLD and identify appropriate teaching and learning strategies to support them in and out of class.
  • Provide staff training and support all aspects of SLCN/ASD, its impact on learning, emotional development and behaviour, and on strategies to support these needs in the classroom. 
  • Plan and deliver intervention programmes to groups of students or individuals and design appropriate short term programmes, such as transition and executive functioning programmes.
  • To support and coach our Learning Support Assistants in their roles and provide guidance in their support of students in class.
  • Maintain positive, professional relationships with students, staff, parents and carers.


The successful candidate will:

  • be suitably qualified to assess students with SLCN/ASD.
  • hold a specialist qualification in Speech, Language and Communication needs.
  • have a thorough understanding of a wide range of difficulties and behaviours associated with ASD/SLCN and their impact on learning.
  • have experience of working within an educational setting.
  • be talented, dynamic and will challenge and motivate our students to get the very best meaningful outcomes.
  • enjoy working as part of a pro-active, solution-focused team, as well as work well independently.
  • have a calm, friendly and approachable manner.
