Job overview

We are looking for a Learning Outside the Classroom Facilitator to support the children in our Secondary Nurture Group from our North Hill premises. The Nurture group is split into two groups of 6 students who spend half the day in the classroom lead by a teacher and half the day offsite doing a range of activities lead by the Learning outside the classroom facilitators. Each group also has a high level of support from learning mentors.

The successful candidates should have experience of working with young people who have social, emotional, and mental health needs, a desire to make a difference, be organised and professional, and have the resilience to manage pupils with learning and behaviour difficulties.

Duties:

·      To contribute to the planning and implementation of the sports and activities programme in a collaborative way with PE and LOTC colleagues and Nurture group teacher.

·      To deliver sports and outdoor learning activities within the framework of policies and procedures detailed within ACE policies

·      To organise learning opportunities linked to school and national curriculum, including visits to museums, places of interest, careers fairs and local attractions.

·      To lead the daily delivery of sports and outdoor learning activities to groups of vulnerable and challenging pupils. Pupils attending ACE may have been excluded from mainstream schools or be in danger of being excluded. They may have complex educational needs, exhibiting barriers to learning which may include social and emotional issues and poor levels of literacy and numeracy.

Skill and Experience:

  • Experience of working in informal or school settings with secondary aged school groups.
  • Understanding of and enthusiasm for environmental and sustainable issues.
  • Understanding of how children and young people learn in a practical context.
  • In depth knowledge of a range of sport and/or outdoor activities.
  • Understanding of risk management procedures in an outdoor context
  • Reasonable level of education particularly literacy, numeracy and ICT.
  • Excellent communication skills with a range of customer groups, colleagues, and parents.
  • Competent and qualified to lead a range of outdoor activities for young people such orienteering, moorland walking, PE, cross curricular learning linked to classroom practice and learning linked to careers and personal development.
  • Awareness of the national curriculum for schools
  • Understanding of Health and Safety requirements for the safe management of outdoor activity sessions
