Job overview

For September 2019, the Headmaster and Governors of Colston’s School seek to appoint two Sports Assistants; one at the Lower and one at the Upper School. The successful candidates will be dynamic, positive and driven individuals, perhaps with plans to enter teaching or coaching in the future. This is an excellent opportunity during or after university for an individual looking to gain experience before following a possible career in teaching or sports coaching.

The Lower School (3-11yrs) includes an in-class support role and sports coaching. Colston’s is a day school so this role does not include evening duties in a boarding capacity. The successful candidate will also have some games coaching in the Upper School (including Saturdays).

The Upper School (11-18yrs) role will include general teaching support duties in the PE and Games department, coaching a selection of the school’s major sports (rugby, hockey, netball, tennis, rounders and cricket) and some administrative tasks. Some support of Lower School Games may also be included. There are no evening boarding duties associated with this role but support of weekend fixtures will be essential.

Colston’s is a thriving co-educational day school on the outskirts of Bristol that has a tradition of helping individuals and teams reach the highest levels of sporting achievement whilst encouraging participation and competition at all levels of ability.   Easily accessible from the motorway network with approximately 750 students aged from 3 to 18. The Upper School occupies a glorious thirty acre campus and has all of its facilities on-site.

In addition to the above the following would be desirable but would not preclude employment:

· Experience of coaching children of a variety of ages in different settings.

· Evidence of a drive to want to become a teacher

· Evidence of sporting achievements in a chosen field or fields

This post is full time during term time with some additional commitments for weekend fixtures. This is a temporary post starting on the first staff working day at the start of the Autumn Term 2019 on Wednesday 28th August and is expected to last until the end of the Summer Term 2020 on Friday 3rd July. The salary for this post will be £8,000, paid as a monthly salary for your contracted hours across the school year plus accommodation and lunch during term time.

For further details and download an application form, please click on the 'quick apply' button. Within the supporting statement of your application please be clear on why you would wish to join Colston’s, what experience you have to date and what level of sports coaching you can offer (especially in regards to the main school sports). Please also be clear in your application on which area of the school you wish to be considered for (Upper, Lower or both).

The closing date for applications is 25th January 2019.

Interviews will take place on the 11th and 12th February 2019.

Colston's School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and disqualification by association checks.

About Collegiate School, Bristol

Welcome to Collegiate.

We are a thriving and happy co-educational day school for pupils aged 3 to 18, located just north of Bristol. At Collegiate we have approximately 800 pupils, with our Preparatory School accommodating pupils from Nursery to Year 6, and the Senior School accommodating students from Year 7 up to our Sixth Form. In 2019 Collegiate was rated as ‘Excellent in all areas’ in our ISI report.

Our holistic approach to education not only enables our students to excel academically, but we ensure activities beyond the classroom play an equally important part in their time here at Collegiate. Our beautiful 30-acre grounds and excellent facilities across all faculties allow pupils to explore a huge range of sporting, creative and extra-curricular activities, with a work hard, play hard philosophy bringing out the best in our students.

Pastoral care is core to Collegiate life and underpins all that we do. Across the whole school our supportive house system provides the structure through which we monitor and support the development, well-being and happiness of all of our young people.

With a shining sporting legacy, sport too plays a huge part in the life of our pupils. We encourage everyone to get involved because physical education is important for a healthy mind and allows each pupil to develop self-esteem and a strong team ethic. We value and nurture sporting excellence, arranging a full fixture list for pupils of all talents to represent the school.

Our staff are proud to work at Collegiate and are well supported to ensure our academic standards and innovative approach to the development of teaching and learning across the school are maintained.
