Job overview
Withernsea High School seeks an experienced and qualified colleague to lead our work with students in the Student Support Unit (The Loft), which seeks to raise the attainment of disengaged students and those who face challenges to making progress, such as low attendance, poor behaviour and disengagement from learning. The overall aim is to implement effective strategies to improve the inclusion of identified students, and re-engage them with as much mainstream education as possible. The aim of the unit is to provide alternative learning for those students not accessing mainstream lessons and this will be in collaboration with the Progress and Pastoral Teams based at the school. The nature of the role will require effective home-school liaison skills, in order to engage families in the learning of their children.
We are committed to raising standards and in our Ofsted 2016 inspection were found to be a “Good” school with many strengths:
- The headteacher and governors have high expectations of pupils and staff.
- Around the school, pupils’ conduct is good. They care well for the school environment, which is litter free. The school is a calm and purposeful place.
- Pupils support the work of the school well by taking on leadership roles. Overall, pupils treat each other and adults with respect and this leads to effective personal development, behaviour and welfare.
- Teaching Assistants make a good contribution to pupils’ learning both inside and outside the classroom. They support pupils with a range of abilities as they have a good understanding of the subjects they are supporting pupils in.
The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults. Appointment is subject to an enhanced DBS check.

Withernsea High School is a smaller than average local authority maintained secondary school for students aged 11-16. Situated in Holderness, East Riding of Yorkshire with a coastal location, it has all the advantages of a pleasant rural environment. There is affordable housing in the seaside town of Withernsea and in the surrounding villages house prices are relatively low. Located approximately 18 miles to the east of Hull, the 2017 City of Culture, the school serves the population of southern Holderness and currently educates around 750 pupils.
The school benefitted from a rebuild and refurbishment in 2016 and as such is spacious, modern and fully resourced.

Ofsted report
Our Ofsted inspection in November 2021 rated the school Good in all areas.
"Pupils at this school are welcoming. A strong sense of tolerance and respect for others develops through the curriculum of the ‘head, hand, and heart’."
"Pupils are focused in lessons. Teachers deal quickly with rare instances of off task behaviour. Pupils respond to teachers’ instructions well. At social times, pupils’ behaviour is calm. There are clear rules and routines which pupils understand and follow. Expectations of pupils are high."
"Leaders have identified key aims in the curriculum. These include helping to ‘broaden horizons’ for pupils. The personal development curriculum has been carefully planned to achieve this aim. One pupil told inspectors that an important aim of the school was ‘to make people feel welcome, no matter who they are’."
