About the role:

We are looking for a qualified and experienced Welfare and Counselling Practitioner to support students undertaking Health and Social Care, Access to University programmes (19+), Public Service and Hair and Beauty courses at City and Islington College.   The role will involve delivering a holistic welfare support service, providing personal, course related and pastoral advice on a range of issues such as housing, student finance, legal (advocacy) assistance and benefits. Working with external agencies is a key aspect of this role as is responding to welfare related emergencies. You will hold a caseload of students throughout the year and offer a daily drop in service for new referrals. You will work closely with other college services in seeking to enable the retention and progression of our learners.  

The candidate will be expected to deliver a comprehensive and ethical counselling service to students. Counselling work is mainly short term and the counsellor will work in an integrated way, drawing on their knowledge of the main therapeutic modalities to meet the needs of learners. An understanding of safeguarding procedures is crucial.

About you:

You will need to have significant experience of working in the FE sector (or similar educational setting) both with 16-19 year old young people and adults. You must have a professional qualification in higher education at degree level and have BACP or UKCP accreditation, Counselling (minimum of Diploma level) as well as extensive experience of welfare related work (qualifications in Advice and Guidance would be an advantage).  Those who are in the process of obtaining accreditation will not be considered. You should have substantial post-qualifying experience of providing short-term counselling to a linguistically and culturally diverse client group with a high level of social need as well as knowledge and understanding of current welfare system.
