Job overview

We are recruiting for a truly exceptional Mathematician who is looking to move into subject leadership and, working with our Director of Mathematics, ensure the continuing success of  A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics. The candidate will be required to create an in house support system for STEP, MAT, TMUA and AEA as well as developing our enrichment provision for gifted Mathematicians in KS3 and KS4, such as UKMT challenge preparation and practice.

Mathematics at Gravesend Grammar School has been a strength of the school for many years.  It has consistently been one of our top performing subjects. A Level Mathematics is by far our largest A Level subject, with over 50% of our students taking Maths at A Level, well over 200 hundred students. We also have a highly successful Further Maths cohort, some of whom will also take STEP, TMUA, MAT and/or AEA qualifications.

At GCSE, we would expect all students to gain a level 5, with at least 70% achieving level 7, 8 or 9. A third of A Level Mathematics students achieve A*/A grades and two thirds of the Further Mathematicians will also achieve at this level. The majority of our students go on to study in some of the best universities in the world to read Mathematics or related degrees.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional Mathematician and passionate about Mathematics. They will have the ability to share this with staff and students. They will be creative, take initiative and be able to lead by example. The successful candidate will work with our newly appointed Director of Mathematics to lead and develop a department of highly qualified graduates that teach intellectually curious, high calibre students.  The school has developed a culture that places Mathematics at its heart and is looking for someone who can not only continue its success but also improve upon it.

We seek:

A well qualified teacher of Mathematics (Honours degree with QTS) that has the ability to teach Mathematics across the full age range, but whose focus will be on the delivery and development of the Mathematics and Further Mathematics curriculum within Key Stage 5.

  • An outstanding classroom practitioner who is flexible and innovative with a rigorous approach to assessment and learning
  • The ability to build strong relationships with colleagues and students
  • Commitment to the  exceptional standards of teaching and learning by students and staff to achieve the results expected at this School
  • An aspiring leader who can instil a culture of continuous professional development within the Department for both teachers and support staff
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with other leaders
  • A committed team member who will contribute to wider school activities

We offer:

Enthusiastic and highly able students who “attain very high standards and make excellent progress” (OfSTED).

  • A well-resourced Mathematics department, fully staffed by qualified specialists
  • Supportive and enthusiastic colleagues, and a positive working environment
  • A strong relationship with the local community with fast links to London and Europe; free on-site parking
  • Intelligent and articulate students that are ready to learn
  • Benenden Healthcare Scheme
  • Potential for on-site accommodation
  • Generous leadership non-contact allowance
  • A comprehensive and varied GGS CPD programme and support for personal CPD requests

It is a non-denominational school.

Values and vision

Uniquely, Gravesend Grammar School has reduced the number of teachers at Key Stage 3, by using specialist teachers who are highly skilled in delivering a range of subjects. This additional time spent with students helps create deep and lasting relationships and ensures teachers are very aware of individual student progress and pastoral needs.

The boys' school offers a wealth of opportunities for students to participate in concerts and productions. It recently adopted an Arts Award for all of its lower school students.

In sport, the secondary school is linked with many clubs including Gravesend Rugby Club, Old Gravesendians’ Rugby Club, Gravesham Hockey Club, Northfleet Badminton Club, Iroquois Basketball Club, Gravesham Tennis Club, and Gravesend and Meopham Cricket Clubs. These links allow the school to enhance its provision externally by using specialist facilities and coaching.

Ofsted report

“Teachers have the highest expectations for all of the students. Staff benefit from an excellent training programme that makes sure all are up to date and always developing their expertise. All of the students attain very high standards and make excellent progress as a result of the quality of the teaching they receive and as a result of their own ambition and positive attitudes to learning. The sixth form provides an excellent preparation for students’ next steps in life whether at university or in training and employment.”
