"Love, Respect, Flourish"

We require a well-qualified and dynamic Subject Leader of Geography to join and lead our highly performing Geography Department. Through the teaching of geography we aim to develop curious and responsible global citizens; inspired by the awe and wonder of the world with an understanding of the interactions between people and places.

Geography is important because it keeps us aware of current issues in the world and gives us a better understanding of the places and people around us. - Martha, Year 13

Geography is a popular and successful curriculum area in the school. The department is well equipped, and teaches pupils in Key Stage 3, GCSE and A-level classes. Geography has a track record of academic success with Humanities value added consistently being ‘Significantly Positive’ and ranked in the top 10% nationally, with 71% of students gaining A*-B at A Level and 46% gaining grades 9- 7 at GCSE in 2022. Many students each year go on to study Geography or Geography related degrees at University. The Geography department run regular trips and events including a popular and exciting annual residential trip to Iceland.

You will develop the Geography curriculum, including the effective monitoring and evaluation of the quality and standards of provision in relation to student performance, progression and learning for all learners and take the lead in the pursuit of excellence of achievement and attainment in the subject. We can offer you the opportunity to develop your skills and experience, with expert line management and coaching in a school where the individual is at the heart of what we do.

Working at St. Mary’s is an extraordinary opportunity. We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers. Students are keen to learn, colleagues are supportive, and there is a strong sense of inclusion and belonging where our Christian ethos and values pervade all aspects of school life.

Added to this, the school is also at an extremely exciting juncture in its future. We are a founding member in the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy Trust formed on 1st September 2021. Demand is high, and the school faces an extremely strong and positive financial future.

Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
