Job overview

Are you passionate about the transformative impact that a high-quality Geography curriculum can have on young people’s lives through inspiring them to understand the world beyond their own doorstep?

Are you able to bring the best out in colleagues, working collaboratively to deliver on challenging targets?

Due to the promotion of the current postholder to a senior role in school, we are seeking to appoint a knowledgeable and ambitious Subject Leader to lead our successful Geography team through the next stage of its development.  Building on an established and rigorous existing curriculum across KS3-5, you would be working alongside an ambitious and motivated team of geographers who are driven by the goal of inspiring our young people to develop a life-long passion for learning about the spaces and places that exist on our diverse and dynamic planet.

Geography is a core subject at key stage 3 and a highly popular choice at key stage 4, with two thirds of year 10 and 11 students opting to study GCSE. The department also has a thriving A-level cohort and the number of students choosing the subject in the sixth form continues to grow.

The candidate:

You, like us, will share our belief in the highest standards of academic attainment in a comprehensive setting.

Working alongside the current postholder who will take on a wider school responsibility, the successful applicant will have:

·        Strong personal values of integrity and compassion

·        Excellent subject knowledge and a commitment to continually developing it

·        A strong and sustained track record of delivering strong outcomes at GCSE and A Level.

·        Experience of developing and delivering an excellent Geography curriculum and will be able to motivate the team to deliver excellent student outcomes.

·        A keen interest in developing leadership and management skills

·        Cognisance of current best practice and want to foster in others a research-based approach to designing and implementing a highly impactful Geography curriculum.

You will deliver lessons to a consistently high standard, and you will have a proven track record of excellent outcomes at GCSE and A level. You will have the experience and ambition to develop our current fieldwork offer to support students with applying learning outside of the classroom and planning for progression in skills of geographical enquiry across KS3-5, particularly in embedding high quality fieldwork across Y7-9.

You will be joining a team of highly skilled Subject Leaders who are ambitious in ensuring our vision of a powerful knowledge curriculum enables all pupils to take part in the great conversations in society.

"Leaders have introduced a broad and ambitious curriculum for all…and have thought carefully about how to capture students’ wider interest in the subjects they learn." OFSTED 2022

We believe in developing our staff and have a dynamic and supportive management team and an effective CPD programme which includes a regular teaching and learning forum, peer-coaching and teacher journal club. At WCS we will offer you:

·        A supportive and collegiate staff culture.

·        An evidence-informed approach to teaching and learning.

·        A bespoke CPD programme; and

·        Staff benefits including an interest-free season ticket loan and cycle-to-work scheme.

Westminster City School is a successful 11-18 boys’ Christian non-denominational comprehensive academy with a heavily oversubscribed, mixed sixth form. Ours is a vibrant learning community situated in the heart of central London with all the opportunities and advantages of an inner-city school. In March 2022, the school’s OFSTED inspection confirmed that the school remains a ‘Good’ school, but we are restless in our ambition to be ‘Outstanding’ in time for the school’s 150th anniversary in 2027.

“Leaders and Governors are proud of and ambitious for the school. They consider staff workload carefully, for example when introducing recent changes to the school’s feedback policy” OFSTED 2022

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. The successful applicant will need to undertake an enhanced criminal record check via the DBS.
