The Governors are looking to appoint a hard-working, inspiring and talented Subject Leader of Social Sciences to join our existing team and help take St Oscar Romero Catholic School into the next chapter of its exciting journey. Our school has been on a rapid journey of improvement, something that was recognised in July 2019 when our school was judged outstanding in all categories in its Diocesan Section 48 inspection.

In September 2024, the school will open Sixth Form provision for its Year 12 students and will be offering a traditional academic curriculum with some vocational qualifications. The uptake of the Social Sciences has been extremely high and we will be running A-Level Psychology, A-Level Sociology and a Level 3 BTEC in Criminology.

The role of Subject Leader of Social Sciences is a new and exciting opportunity in which the successful candidate will have the responsibility of creating an outstanding department with an ethos of excellence. This role is fundamental to the school’s vision to be the best school in the country.

All lessons of the Social Sciences will be taught in our brand new Sixth Form Centre. Ideally the successful candidate will have experience of teaching both A-Level Psychology and A-Level Sociology, although a specialism in just one of these disciplines will also be considered. The ability to teach Criminology would also be preferable. Some previous experience of subject leadership is highly desirable, although not essential. This role could be a perfect first promotion for an ambitious teacher with leadership aspirations.

If you want to work with wonderful students, committed staff and a forward-thinking leadership team, this is the school for you.  We are always striving to improve and we want you to be part of this journey. Please download an application pack from our website www.stromeros.co.ukand and use the application form included in the pack and follow the instructions on how to apply which can be found in the introductory letter.

Key facts about our school:

●      Outstanding GCSE results and an upward trend in all subjects

●      Progress 8 score of +0.98 in 2023, placing us as the highest performing school in West Sussex and in the top 2% of schools nationally

●      Fantastic students who are motivated, hardworking, and whose behaviour is exemplary

●      Fantastic team of staff, who are collaborative, open, and supportive of the students and each other

●      Oversubscribed with waiting lists in all year groups

●      We were rated ‘Outstanding’ in our Section 48 Diocesan Inspection in July 2019

●      We were rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in March 2018. From a recent Ofsted inspection (Section 8, 2023) the report stated ‘there is enough evidence of improved performance to suggest that the school could be judged outstanding if we were to carry out a Section 5 graded inspection now. The school’s next inspection will be a graded inspection’

●      New small academic Sixth Form, with highly aspirational students who want to learn

The school is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to the safeguarding and protection of children and individuals. This post is subject to a DBS Enhanced Disclosure.

About St Oscar Romero Catholic School

Headteacher's Welcome Message

I am extremely proud to introduce and welcome you to St Oscar Romero’s Catholic School.

Our aim is simple, we want to be the best school in the country. This means that we can ‘hand on heart’ say that our students get a better deal than if they attended another school.

St Oscar Romero has been on an upward trend for the last six years. Last year, 86% of students achieved at least a Grade 4 (equivalent to a C grade or above) in both English and Maths and 60% of students achieved at least a Grade 5 (known as a strong pass) in both English and Maths. Departments across the school performed exceptionally well, with English, Maths and Science all securing results of 90%+ at a Grade 4+ or above.  Our Progress 8 score was +0.97, placing us in the top 2% of school's in the country.

In May 2023, Ofsted carried out a short inspection and concluded that ‘There is enough evidence of improved performance to suggest that the school could be judged outstanding, if we were to carry out a section 5 inspection now.’ Our last Diocesan Section 48 Inspection took place in July 2019 and judged the school as ‘Outstanding’ in every category. This was a first for the school and a proud moment in the school’s 65-year history.

As a Catholic School, St Oscar Romero’s is founded on Gospel values. We provide a nurturing environment of love, respect and discipline, where every individual is highly valued and our care and concern for others is central to our mission. We expect our students to work hard, behave well, dress smartly and pursue excellence in all that they do inside and outside of the classroom. Our culture is one of high expectations in all that we do.

I invite you to experience St Oscar Romero’s Catholic School first-hand by having a tour of our school and I look forward to meeting you in the future.

Mr Byrne
