We are seeking an outstanding individual with drive, passion, enthusiasm and ambition to lead our growing English Department.  This is an opportunity for an excellent classroom practitioner with strong subject knowledge and experience at teaching across KS3 to KS5 to take our English department and outcomes to the next level.

You will have excellent organisational, planning and communication skills and have high expectations of all students to secure the best outcomes. You believe that all students are capable of success and recognise that success comes in different forms.  Driving forward strategic priorities you will ensure there is a robust curriculum and assessment framework in place underpinned by a key focus on improving reading and literacy skills across the whole school – ensuring significant impact at whole college level.

As a leader you are inspirational, forward thinking and put students at the heart of everything you do.  You are creative, dynamic, empathetic and have a natural ability to lead and empower both students and staff. You hold the highest expectations of yourself, your staff and your students and recognise the importance of the curriculum both inside and outside the classroom, and are innovative in your commitment to both, ensuring that English is always high profile within the college.

If you know this is the role for you and are confident you can lead our successful, supportive and highly motivated English team, then please apply!

Newton Abbot College is a mixed 11 –19 Academy with over 1000 students on roll with a large and diverse Sixth Form. Our recent full section 5 Ofsted inspection in April 2019 described us as, "a  harmonious school where pupils are thriving" and went on to note that, "pupils are respectful of each other and adults.  Their behaviour is consistently of a high standard."

The College has undergone rapid change including significant improvement to examination results at Key Stages 4 and 5; levels of progress over the last few years have been outstanding and are predicted to improve further over the coming years. We are determined to build on our successes and, as a College with Academy status, aspire to be outstanding in all we do. We offer a real challenge and excellent professional opportunities to colleagues who are keen to contribute their drive, creativity and high expectations to our go-ahead College’s future.

Newton Abbot College was originally established in 1904 as the Newton Abbot town Grammar School, becoming Knowles Hill School in 1975 with the introduction of the comprehensive system.  In 2008, the school became Newton Abbot College.  Along with a new identity and uniform came a strong ethos of the highest expectations for student learning and progress.  In 2011 we gained Academy status.  Today, the College offers 11-19 year old students a challenging curriculum in a calm, purposeful, well-ordered community.

We are known for our high standards of teaching and our focus on student achievement.  At the heart of everything we do is the individual who learns here. Our focus is on giving them a complete learning experience so that they leave us as happy, confident, knowledgeable young people.  For that to happen, our teachers must stimulate and challenge them in the classroom and beyond.  We treat all our students as individuals.  We set targets and track progress so that no student can become invisible.  We are recognised leaders in this practice.  We endeavour to give our students the skills they need to become independent lifelong learners.
