Teacher & Humanities Lead (Qualified Teacher or an Education Officer)

This role would suit someone who has recently completed their NQT period and wants to move to a setting where they can further develop their understanding of mental health and SEND needs. We would also consider an ‘Education Officer’ from a major institution such as English Heritage, Woodland Trust, or the National Trust if they have had significant experience of planning and teaching quality learning experiences and materials.

We have 20 young people all with anxiety needs, several of whom also have SALT, OT and other requirements within their EHP. In terms of SEND diagnosis there is a huge variety; ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia, PD but a common thread of poor mental health.

We are looking for someone who truly regards their work as a ‘career’ not a ‘job’ and who will fully take advantage of the shorter working hours, very small class sizes and supportive team to take on CPD opportunities and develop themselves as an excellent practitioner and subject leader.

We combine humanities teaching into one subject so a principal degree specialism in R.E, history or geography would be acceptable alongside a secondary PGCE or indeed a strong primary trained candidate with skills in these areas would also be considered for the role. The ability to tutor one of these areas to GCSE would be advantageous, but not essential.

What does the role entail?

• Teaching small groups of students (usually 5, sometimes up to 10 with support) who have significant developmental and cognitive delay (significantly behind chronological expectations) in years 7 to 10.

• Attending and contributing to 50% of the regular pathway meetings (our version of IEPs)

• Delivering staff training as part of the subject leader role, along with monitoring the subject and student enjoyment and progress

• Reporting to the governing body (EMAT) on progress and the effectiveness of training, parent support and strategies you will be leading. When necessary also sharing this with Ofsted or LEA Alternative Provision Inspectors.

• Keeping excellent records of pupil achievement and attainment. Carrying out academic diagnostic testing to support this in line with the ethos and resources used by the school.

• To work very closely with other subject leaders and teachers within a collaborative work ethos

• You need to be on site by 9:15 in the morning, ready to attend a briefing at 9:30 with the first lesson promptly starting at 10am. Last lesson ends at 4pm, with an evening briefing until 4:30 each night. Staff meeting until 5:30pm once a week. There will sometimes be meetings and events outside of these hours, but we try to do things in school time as much as possible.

• You must be a qualified teacher and have completed NQT or significant experience as a humanities Education Officer

• You must be someone who is interested in your own CPD and willing to go on training courses

• You must be confident and conscientious

• You must be happy to administer First Aid as all our staff are trained to do so

• You must be an observant person, able to notice young people’s achievements and difficulties

• You must be loyal, professional and dedicated to your career
