Contract term: Temporary

Kirkcudbright Academy is a vibrant and forward looking school that is aiming to provide the best possible future for all our pupils. We are seeking to appoint a full time temporary teacher who can contribute to teaching in Creative and Aesthetics for the 2017-18 academic year. The vacancy arises following the resignation of an Art teacher and we would especially welcome applicants with a specialism in this area. However, we would also consider applicants from other creative disciplines.

Kirkcudbright Academy was founded in 1582 and is housed in a range of historic and modern buildings adjacent to a community swimming pool and squash court. The grounds consist of pleasant lawns and woodland on the Dee estuary close to conservation area and artists' colony. Kirkcudbright itself is a fishing town on the Solway coast and is a popular destination for tourists. It is close to Dumfries, which is on the main arterial route to ferry ports for Northern Ireland.

Pupils are able to benefit from extra-curricular clubs and associations such as theatre productions, Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, Eco Schools Group and debating. Sporting activities on offer include football, basketball, netball, rugby, swimming, gymnastics and show-jumping. Students also take part in community outreach projects from Secondary 1, and charity fundraising is particularly important to those pupils in Secondary 6.

The Support for Learning Department works with pupils with special educational needs in mainstream classes and on a withdrawal basis.

Dumfries and Galloway’s approach to education looks to combine the traditional values, ethos and atmosphere of this unique corner of Scotland with fresh 21st Century thinking. We are seeking to appoint creative teachers with vision and a passion for learning. This post represents an excellent opportunity to be innovative in developing our culture of sharing and learning.

Applicants for teaching posts must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland, Clerwood House, 96 Clermiston Road, Edinburgh, EH12 6UT in the appropriate sector.

This post is considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
