Castle Douglas High School is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational secondary school with sixth form situated in the town of Castle Douglas within Dumfries and Galloway, in western Scotland. It is a state school. Smaller than average in size for a school of its type, the school’s latest handbook identifies a school roll of 415 secondary and sixth form students between the ages of 12-18.

The school was built in 1958 and has since gone under a number of renovations. It became part of the Scottish Government’s School of Ambition programme in 2006.

Values and Vision

Castle Douglas High School is an area with a continually positive ethos and a happy, purposeful atmosphere. Using the motto “achievement, respect, unity”, it is a school of high aspiration.

A varied and productive curriculum combined with a great range of extracurricular activities ensures that students are given a strong educational grounding to apply to their future lives. It also ensures that parents, as well as students and teachers, are key to the success of the school.

Education Scotland

“Particular strengths of the school [include] well-behaved young people who are keen to learn [and] the standards achieved in national examinations. [Students] cooperate well with teachers in lessons and enjoy opportunities to work actively and independently, to express their opinions, and to work together in groups. Almost all young people feel safe and cared for in school, that they are treated fairly and with respect, and that the school is helping them to become more confident.”
