Job overview

The Art and Design Technology department at St George’s is internationally renowned. Our students consistently attain exceptional results in GCSE & IB examinations. They have also achieved great success in local, national & international competitions including the Saatchi Schools’ Art Prize, Design Museum Student Prize and various IBO & United Nations competitions. Many of our alumni have gone on to study in Art & Design related fields in prestigious institutions including The Royal College of Art, St Martin’s, Goldsmiths, Cambridge University, Chelsea, The Slade and the École des Beaux-Arts.

We are currently seeking to appoint an energetic and creative teacher to lead and manage Design Technology within our faculty. The successful applicant will be responsible to the Head of Art and Design & Technology. The post involves developing schemes of work and associated resources. The post holder will teach all DT classes within the school across Key Stages 3 & 4. They will also be responsible for maintaining and ordering materials within the department.

At Key Stage 3 we adapt the UK National Curriculum to suit our local needs and facilities. We follow the CIE Graphic Products specification at IGCSE. Our students specialise in architectural modelling as their main coursework unit. They make extensive use of CAD/CAM within the design and manufacture of their final models. Consequently, a particular specialism in this area would confer a distinct advantage.

Whilst we do not currently offer Design Technology to IB Diploma level, experience of the subject would certainly be of interest to us.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead local and possibly international visits. In previous years this has included the student degree shows in Manchester. Extra-curricular clubs, intervention sessions and workshops make a significant contribution to our students’ success. All members of the department are expected to contribute to this programme.

The department is housed in purpose built classrooms and workshops, occupying most of the upper floor of our main school building. In addition to traditional workshop equipment such as a vacuum former, band saw, buffing and sanding machines, our D&T facilities include a small dedicated DT computer suite, a full class set of 22 high specification laptops, 2 3D printers, 1 A2 laser cutter, a Roland Modela milling machine, ceiling mounted projectors and visualizers. All teaching staff are provided with a laptop and an iPad. Within the department as a whole we also have a large kiln, batik and silkscreen printing equipment. The department also enjoys the support of a full time technician.

Applicants should be able to present an online gallery of recent work by their students and where possible themselves. Flickr or similar would be ideal.
