Job overview

We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic teacher to lead a small but successful and committed department which promotes the study and enjoyment of Global Politics, by encouraging students to challenge themselves, take risks and progress to the best of their ability. Applications would be welcome from suitably-qualified teachers with expertise in any relevant discipline, though a teaching or academic background in Politics, International Relations, Modern History, Economics, Sociology, Development Studies, Law or Geography would probably provide the best starting point for this very conceptually-based syllabus. Global Politics is offered as an optional subject within the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form. Further details of the curriculum specification can be found by following the links at: http://theabbey.co.uk/academic/humanities/global-politics

The Global Politics Department at the Abbey School prides itself on its high standards and its excellent examination results. The successful applicant would be expected to maintain this tradition and to foster varied teaching and learning methods within a stimulating classroom environment. The school was one of the first in the world to offer Global Politics from its inception as a pilot subject in 2012, and as we are one of the longest-established schools in this fast-growing subject the new head of department would be expected to continue our leading role in the continued worldwide development of the curriculum. The vacancy arises because the current postholder has been appointed to a post leading the subject in the IB’s Academic Division.

Both the Department and Library are extremely well equipped and each classroom has a computer and data projector. Annually, LVI Economics, Politics and French students attend the “Your Future in Europe” Conference in Paris, and UVI students attend a conference on UK political developments in London. The successful candidate would be expected to develop and be involved in extra-curricular activities.

Interviews will only be arranged following our receipt of a completed application form.

Closing Date:  Monday 5th December 2016

Interviews to be held: From 7th December 2016

This role will start in April 2017.

The Jane Austen Wing at the Senior School has modern classrooms for Humanities as well as bright Art studios and enhanced ICT facilities. The IB has widened the options for Sixth Formers who can also choose their desired A-level combination from a wide range of subjects.

The Abbey Junior School (ages 3 - 11) offers a broad curriculum and the atmosphere is friendly, lively, purposeful and fun.
