Job overview

We are looking for a Teacher In Charge to lead our small school in Orpington.
We require an experienced primary teacher who is committed to fulfilling the potential of every one of our pupils academic and social and emotional needs.
Clannad School is a small independent school, registered for a maximum of 5 residential pupils, from the age of 8 to 17. The school works with extremely vulnerable children who have social, emotional and emerging mental health needs.

The school is attached to a small children's home, providing a safe and nurturing environment for anxious, vulnerable pupils unable to sustain a mainstream placement.

Our educational offer is a balance of academic studies, physical and outdoor education, and personal development programmes.

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience of working in a SEMH environment
  • Fully qualified teacher status
  • Sound understanding of assessment processes, tracking and monitoring progress
  • Excellent understanding of complex education and behavioural needs of Primary and Secondary pupils
  • Ability to differentiate the curriculum in order to meet the needs of pupils within the school
  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to work within a multi professional setting
  • Leadership and management behaviours 
  • Line management of teachers and teaching assistants including supervision, absence management, performance management and appraisal
  • Understanding of submission and delivery of national qualifications and accreditations


Job Description:

  • Represent the teaching team on the SLT of the school
  • Prepare learning and progress information for Annual reviews and Peps and chair as required
  • Leading and managing the operational elements of the provision
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of complex behavioural difficulties and the dynamic risk assessments required around those difficulties
  • Ensure the cost budgeting of the school is allocated to curriculum resources
  • Ensure teaching staff receive regular CPD
  • Ensure that a system for monitoring and developing the quality of teaching and learning is in place
  • Ensure that a robust assessment process, tracking and monitoring of pupil progress is in place and support is consistent
  • Ensure consistent and high quality, short, medium and long-term planning across the school
  • To deliver learning activities to pupils, adjusting activities according to individual needs
  • Work in a cohesive way with the care and clinical staff for all planning for young people
  • Ensure the statutory requirements for the national Curriculum are met
  • Ensure that the curriculum of the school is appropriate to the children's differing experiences, interests, aptitudes and backgrounds and is clearly stated
  • Continue to develop innovative ways of providing education for the pupils within the school
