The Creative Arts and Technologies Department is a thriving and dynamic area which caters for over 500 students studying a range of A Level, vocational and enrichment courses in Media, ICT and Art. Staff have high expectations of all students and working relationships are positive and supportive. There is an excellent record of student achievement on all courses. Staff work closely together in planning the delivery of courses, developing teaching materials and exchanging ideas, resources and teaching strategies. The department values an approach to teaching Media which addresses issues of power and inequality worldwide and the media's role in these phenomena. 

The courses offered by the department are:-

  • A Level Media Studies 
  • A Level Film Studies
  • Cambridge Technical Level 2 Extended Certificate in Creative Media Production
  • BTEC NQF Level 3 Extended Certificate and Extended Diploma in Creative Digital Production 
  • BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate and Extended Diploma in ICT

The department has recently benefitted from significant upgrading of our already well-resourced IT/Media facilities. Lessons take place in dedicated teaching rooms with excellent facilities for photographic, graphic, HD film and video editing. Students benefit from access to high quality video and digital filming cameras and a range of software to enhance their production work including Premiere, After-Effects, Photoshop, Stencyl and Blender. Media and Film students have a record of producing outstanding film and print coursework and frequently win awards in regional and national competitions. 

The aim of the department is to enrich the learning experience of our students by delivering the syllabus in a manner which is contemporary, varied and challenging. The Department benefits from its links with the Central Studio, (onsite Theatre) with music practice rooms and a sound recording studio. There are excellent facilities to access traditional and digital print making alongside photographic darkroom facilities, an editing suite and a television recording studio. 

Wherever possible, we can offer flexibility in the subjects to be taught, taking into account your personal experience, skills and preferences. As a Personal Tutor, you will also motivate, monitor, support and guide students’ academic progress through regular one-to-one consultations.

Whether you’re experienced or newly qualified, you should be an inspiring teacher with a good working knowledge of recent post-16 curriculum developments. A willingness to contribute to the development of course materials for courses offered by the department is also essential.

Queen Mary’s College is a large progressive and successful sixth form college, conveniently situated close to the centre of Basingstoke in thirty acres of parkland and playing fields. The College has excellent facilities, including the Central Studio (a professional theatre), and a purpose built sports centre for students, staff and local residents, including a swimming pool and two floodlit artificial sports pitches . The site also boasts a state of the art specialist Art and IT building and in January this year a new £12.8 million, three-storey facility was opened designed to accommodate Science, Humanities, Sport and students with learning difficulties and disabilities . Queen Mary’s College is continuing to enhance all aspects of estates and facilities. Teaching and Learning outcomes at the College are excellent. Staff and students enjoy working and studying here and being in the vanguard of educational development in a fast changing 14-19 environment.
