Teacher of Academic Music and Musicianship

The Purcell School is looking to recruit a full-time Teacher of Academic Music and Musicianship, on a fixed term basis, from September 2022 or January 2023 through to mid-July 2023.

The Academic Music Department is the largest department in the school and its goal is to assist students in becoming informed, imaginative and enquiring musicians. Department staff work closely with each of the school’s instrumental departments, and there are particularly strong links with Composition, with several teachers working across both departments.

The Academic Music Department offers a unique programme of study, which forms an important part of every Purcell students’ specialist musical education. Analysis and aural awareness are at the heart of everything we do, and specialist training in these areas is a core component for every student.

In Years 7 to 9, students study a series of set works, which form the basis of creative and analytical projects designed to expand their general musical knowledge and inform their practical instrumental studies. In year 10, students sit the Cambridge IGCSE exam, and in Year 11, they undertake an intense harmony course (in preparation for the Sixth Form) and an in-depth study of larger scale works. In addition, there is an introductory course in Music Technology.

In the Sixth Form, students in Year 13 work towards the Cambridge Pre-U qualification in Music, whilst students in Year 12 follow the OCR A Level Music syllabus. Students who intend to apply to university to read Music are prepared for entrance examinations and interviews. Each year, a number of students go on to read Music at university, including Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and King’s College, London, SOAS and Harvard.

The school’s Musicianship Programme runs in tandem with the above. In Years 7 to 8, pupils attend three Musicianship classes per week: these small-group classes include opportunities to explore music theory from aural and practical perspectives. From Year 9, students can choose from a range of electives (including advanced analysis, grades 6 - 8 music theory, keyboard skills and conducting), all designed to complement their instrumental studies, and their core aural, analysis and exam classes. All students attend a weekly choir rehearsal.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced teacher or a newly qualified teacher to work within this unique musical environment.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

We are looking for a full-time teacher to join us in September 2022 or January 2023 for a fixed term contract until mid-July 2023. Candidate should indicate whether they are available to start in September or January.

The salary will be based on the School’s salary scale, according to the successful candidate’s experience.

Children of staff are not eligible to be educated at the School except through the normal admissions and audition process.

All members of staff are expected to contribute fully to the School’s extra-curricular and/or boarding provision.

The post is subject to a probationary period. All posts are subject to regular appraisal.

The Purcell School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

About The Purcell School

The Purcell School is a world-famous boarding and day school in Bushey near Watford, which aims to provide a rounded education with music at its heart.

The school was founded in 1962, and is Britain’s oldest specialist music school. There are currently over 180 pupils aged from 10-18 years, of whom about 30% come from abroad. Over 75% of pupils are boarders. The sixth form currently comprises around 90 pupils with approximately 25-30 pupils joining the school each year specifically for the Sixth Form. The majority of pupils progress to music conservatoires, many of them on scholarships, while a small number each year elect to go to university, often to Oxbridge or Russell Group institutions.

The school has an enviable reputation for the quality of its musical education and performance. Students enjoy individual tuition on one or two instruments, or in composition, from some of the very best teachers available. They take part in over 200 orchestral, choral and chamber concerts, and have opportunities to perform regularly at venues including the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and St Albans Abbey.

In addition to their musical studies, students study for GCSE and A Level. The range of subjects on offer includes all three sciences, art, drama, English literature, modern languages, history and music technology. All pupils take GCSE and A-level Music.

Our students are the liveliest, most committed and self-motivated young people you could hope to meet. Every day, the School’s corridors echo with the sound of extraordinary music as our students prepare for concerts both here at School and in the most prestigious venues in London.
