Job overview

The governors of Darland High School are looking to appoint a part-time (0.7fte) passionate teacher of English and ALN to teach both in the English Faculty and also within the Additional Learning Needs Department, with a possibility of full time working in the first year.

Darland’s Additional Learning Needs Department houses two Local Authority resources, the larger one for pupils with communication difficulties and a smaller one for those pupils with dyslexia. Approximately 43 pupils are attached to the Resources, spending some time each week receiving specialist tuition from ALN staff. We are looking for someone with a proven track record of raising the achievement of pupils with ALN, particularly those with dyslexia or moderate learning difficulties. The successful candidate will also be expected to teach some mainstream English, particularly to classes where the pupils have weak literacy skills

Darland High School is an 11-16 English medium comprehensive school with 850 students on roll. Serving a cluster of villages in between Wrexham and Chester, the school enjoys easy road and rail access to North West England and North Wales.

The school has a reputation for academic excellence, achieving results at both key stages, which are consistently above both local and national averages. Our Year 11 in 2018 achieved excellent results with 64% achieving at least 5 good GCSEs with English and Maths. We have close relations local community as well as with neighbouring schools, with whom there is a spirit of active curriculum collaboration. The school is set in extensive landscaped grounds and has benefitted from a major rebuilding programme, which saw new science block open in 2011 and the English move in to a new suite of classrooms in the main building. As a result of the improvements in the school, we are oversubscribed in most years.

We are looking for someone who has a love of working with youngsters with learning difficulties and who is  also able to teach English (ideally to GCSE level). Applications must be received by midday on Thursday 20th June. Interviews will take place shortly afterwards.

Darland High School is a hidden gem in the picturesque village of Rossett in North East Wales. We are a mixed, English-language high school serving pupils aged 11-16 in the surrounding villages of Rossett, Marford, Gresford, Holt and Llay. Set in extensive beautiful grounds the school has 850 pupils on roll.

Established in 1958, Darland High School became a comprehensive school in 1972. An extensive building programme over the years has seen the creation of the Griffin Centre, a modern two story building, housing ‘state of the art’ science laboratories and ICT suites. A new library, complete with a full ICT suite, a remodelled foyer and new cookery facilities have also been added recently.

In September 2019 we welcomed new Headteacher Joanne Lee, who has brought in many changes and the school is a 'buzz' of activity. We are at an exciting time, along with extensive refurbishment of the site our team are in the process of developing an engaging New Curriculum for a new generation of students.

Our team of over 130 staff, dedicated and hard-working, are driving towards our common goal - to offer an excellent education to the communities we serve.

We welcome tours of the school prior to application.
