Job overview

More House School is seeking to appoint an innovative teacher to join the Art Department from January 2022. The candidate will be skilled at balancing stretch and challenge with appropriate academic support in a way that will create a learning environment in which every student can achieve her potential. The candidate should have the ability to teach from Year 7 to A Level. The post could suit an NQT (ECT) or an experienced teacher.

The Art, Design and Textiles  Department is a collaborative and supportive department with a reputation for both outstanding academic lessons and a busy and varied extra curricular offering. The department has recently implemented the school-wide use of 1-2-1 devices in all lessons and it would be beneficial to have experience in incorporating technology effectively in Art and Design teaching. There is one Head of Department and two teachers who teach across all year groups in the school. There is an expectation that this role would involve management of some of the extra curricular offerings of the Art,Design and Textiles Department.

In Year 7, 8 and 9, students follow a bespoke curriculum that provides the framework for further study at GCSE level. The development of drawing, painting, sculpting and printmaking skills take place in KS3 in addition to the opportunity to participate in the extra curricular photography, textiles or art clubs. Art and Design and Textiles are popular subjects at both GCSE and A Level. At GCSE, students study the Pearson Edexcel Art,Craft and Design course and make use of our central location to visit current exhibitions throughout the course. Students go on to study either Pearson Art and Design A Level or Textile A Level, with opportunities to undertake extra curricular portfolio and life drawing sessions.

The department is open, encouraging and forward-thinking and there is a willingness to support each other. There is the opportunity to introduce new ideas, participate in cross-curricular teaching and to develop a supportive relationship with students and parents. More House is a small school in a big city, at the heart of which is a vibrant gallery and museum provision, making it the perfect place from which to teach Art and Design. The students describe the school as a family and this feeling is shared by the staff, making More House a fantastic work environment.

This is a part time role (0.6)

About More House School

About the School

More House is an independent Catholic day school for girls aged 11 to 18, founded in 1953 by the Canonesses of St Augustine. In 1971, the School moved to its present home in Knightsbridge, where it is now managed by a lay charitable trust.

Proud of its Catholic foundations and ethos, the School welcomes girls of all faiths, to whom it provides a first-class education in a nurturing environment proudly presented as 'a greenhouse not a hothouse'. Class sizes are small: around 16 girls.

Personal and social development, intellectual curiosity and creativity are enriched through a wide-ranging co-curricular programme that takes full advantage of the School’s central London location.

Values and vision

More House aims to achieve the highest academic performance whilst nurturing the personal development of each pupil.

With an inclusive ethos and family atmosphere, the School is committed to delivering the best possible learning environment for all pupils through a culture of excellence that permeates every classroom and department. Relationships between pupils and staff are strong.

The focus for each pupil is not simply on achieving the best grade, but on delivering the best possible educational experience and creating a lifelong passion for learning. The School’s size means it is small enough to meet the learning needs of each individual but large enough to challenge each individual and provide a wealth of opportunities – academic, sporting, musical, artistic, social and more.

The School aims to:

  • Cultivate inspiring and successful young women by fostering Commitment, Integrity and Compassion.
  • Promote an ethos of spiritual development, humility and self–awareness, founded on the Catholic faith but relevant to those who adhere to other faiths and beliefs.
  • Engender a culture of intellectual curiosity both inside and outside of the classroom and pride in individual and collective achievement.
  • Provide for the social and emotional wellbeing and development of pupils and staff through tolerance, justice and openness in an environment where all are equally valued and where individual rights and dignity are respected.
  • Embrace the philosophy of Global Citizenship by developing an awareness and understanding of whole world sensitivities and the importance of living sustainably.

More House is also committed to maintaining a high level of expertise in its staff through succession planning and staff development.
