Job overview

This is not your average teaching job so we don't want your average teacher! This is your chance to set up Art and Design from scratch in a STEM school: (it's almost an oxymoron isn't it?!) You chose the course, the spec., the specialism. We provide a room and some children. Why build on someone else's foundation when you can begin afresh, afresh, afresh... Why follow when you can lead?

Ok so the school went into 'serious weaknesses' last May but look what we've done since: we've added German, PE and geography to the curriculum; we've got new trustees and new leaders; we've revitalised teaching and learning, attendance monitoring, tracking of pupil progress. Even Ofsted have said we are 'taking effective actions towards the removal of the serious weaknesses designation'. Don't believe us. Read the Monitoring Visit Report.

We are a 13-19 school in the centre of Newcastle. We were set up to train the scientists and engineers of the future. We will continue to do so but is it right that they completely miss out on Art and Design? This is your chance to ensure they don't.

We can offer you:

  • The opportunity to make a difference to the lives of some amazing students
  • Great staff and espirit de corps
  • Excellent facilities
  • Fantastic support from your line manager and a Leadership Team who genuinely want to see you succeed and develop
  • A unique opportunity to be instrumental in setting up a new course which will have an enormously positive impact on our school
  • Central Newcastle location
  • Free parking in town which you can use 24/7
  • Free lunches in return for duties

The successful candidate will:

  • Be confident to deliver KS3 and KS4 lessons in Art and Design
  • Excellent subject knowledge and a passion for teaching
  • Be able to deliver engaging lessons which inspire and encourage all students to value the importance of Art & Design in everyday life
  • Be a newly qualified or experienced teacher - we have some amazing NQTs and NQT+1 in key positions. If you're good enough we'll give you the job! If you're really good you'll grow the job into something bigger and better than we've thought of so far!

Discovery School is the first of its kind; a new, industry-driven technical school for 13-19 year olds from Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and County Durham. Our aims are to provide young people with specialist training to meet the requirements of the modern engineering industry.

Discovery School specialises in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). It will equip young people to fill the skills gaps in the sizeable and vibrant specialised engineering sector in the region which has a demand for highly qualified engineers and technicians. The curriculum is designed to offer opportunities for all learners to develop the skills, knowledge and personal qualities they will need to be successful. A unique aspect of the work Discovery School is its link with employers and their involvement in shaping curriculum and supporting delivery. It offers a unique learning experience that looks feels and operates like a high-tech engineering facility in Silicon Valley rather than a traditional secondary school.

Newcastle upon Tyne, more than any other British city, offers a natural location for the Discovery School with its long and proud heritage of complex industrial engineering, from shipbuilding and railways to defence industries,  and a present day position at the forefront of scientific developments.
