Job overview

Teacher of Art

Are you a qualified, talented and experienced Art Teacher able to support and inspire our enthusiastic and creative students by delivering effective teaching and learning in Art and Design to our GCSE and A Level students? Art and Design is a very popular subject with excellent exam results at GCSE and A Level and provides our students with many opportunities to develop their skills both inside and outside of the classroom. You will join a lively and dynamic team including a dedicated Art technician, who are all working together to ensure that our students achieve greater levels of success.

If you are an innovative and inspirational teacher with passion and enthusiasm for your subject, who is committed to achieving high standards within a successful department, then we would love to hear from you.

Royal Russell School educates over 1000 girls and boys between the ages of 3 and 18 and is situated on a beautiful green campus of 110 acres in the Shirley Hills near Croydon, only 30 minutes from Central London. We have over 150 boarding students in the Senior School, and are proud of our day and boarding facilities that rank amongst the best in the South of England. Our pupils, parents and staff experience a warm and friendly environment with strong pastoral care for every pupil alongside a comprehensive co-curricular and enrichment programme. In March 2016 the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) judged the school as ‘excellent’ in all areas and in October 2018 we successfully passed a full ISI compliance inspection.

You should have outstanding subject knowledge and be able to teach confidently across different year groups. In addition, you should be able to deliver high quality tutorial support and a range of co-curricular activities. You should have previous experience of teaching the secondary curriculum in Art and Design, ideally including up to A* grade at Fine Art A level. The ability to offer some A level Photography would also be desirable. The ideal candidate will thrive on working collaboratively and supportively with colleagues to deliver high quality lessons.

An awareness of relevant Health and Safety issues, and the ability to demonstrate effective use of art materials, are also required.

Art and Photography are crucial areas within the school, both in terms of student progression and learning, and also their wider exposure to the challenges and opportunities which such creative subjects bring. Art is taught as a discrete subject through Years 7-13, building on excellent practice in our Junior School, and Photography is available at A level.

The post could suit a newly qualified or experienced teacher with excellent practical skills and the ability to engage and inspire and challenge pupils. The successful applicant will be a passionate advocate of the subject who will be able to contribute effectively to departmental development.

A willingness to contribute to the extra-curricular programme and support the pastoral life of our school is essential.

The Royal Russell pay scale which is above SNS includes a generous allowance for suitably qualified and experienced staff. Allowances are available for specific pastoral and academic responsibilities.

This is an exciting opportunity that offers excellent benefits including a competitive salary, working with a driven and dedicated team of staff, free car parking, free meals, working in our beautiful green parkland estate with easy access to transport links, a discount on School fees, and the use of our sporting and gym facilities, all combined with the opportunity to be part of the vibrant community of the historic Royal Russell School.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
