Job overview

An outstanding Teacher of Art is required for maternity cover starting February 2018

We are seeking to recruit an outstanding and motivated Teacher of Art (maternity cover) to teach Years 7-11 (Years 12-13 depending on experience) who is able to inspire our youngsters and engender a love of learning and of art in particular.

Art plays in important role within Rosebery school and is a popular option at GCSE and A level with, on average, 50 students studying A levels and 75 students in each year at GCSE. Results are consistently above the national average. Last year 98% of GCSE students gained grades A*- C, and 60% of student achieved A*-A. Each year we hold a well-attended and highly praised exhibition.

There are four other members of teaching staff and a part time technician in the Art Department who work very effectively as a team. We have a well-equipped spacious purpose-built block with four large teaching rooms, a darkroom and office. Each room has good storage with additional facilities in the school. All art rooms are equipped with digital projectors and staff iPads are provided. There are a range of facilities in different art rooms including a dedicated art library available to all students, networked photocopiers, desktop computers, art textiles and printmaking facilities.

In Y7 and Y8 pupils have 3 hours per two weeks. At Y9 and KS4 girls following the full GCSE EDEXCEL course have five hours of tuition per two weeks.  Termly skills-based themes form the basis of the course with opportunities for drawing, painting, 3D work, design and photography. First hand observation is crucial, and both years are begun with visits to galleries in London and Brighton.

At KS5 students currently have nine hours of tuition per fortnight.  Students choose from Edexcel Fine Art and/or Photography. Within the Art and Design endorsements we teach to staff strengths.  Each group is jointly taught ensuring support for all students and staff. Year 12 students are taken on a residential trip at the beginning of the course and have extra-curricular opportunities run by staff throughout the two years to enhance their studies.

The Art department takes extra-curricular enrichment seriously for students at all levels. Weekly Art and Photography Clubs, organised by Prefects, and the successful candidate will be expected help continue to involve students in extracurricular opportunities throughout the year. An after-school life drawing course is available for older students and a variety of extended courses including photography, textiles and ceramics workshops are run for younger students. Each year the Art department collaborates with Music and Drama for the school’s highly regarded theatrical productions and co-ordinates an activity project for Year 8.
