Job overview

Westminster Tutors is a small, independent sixth form college in South Kensington. It is Ofsted Outstanding and one of the most academically successful independent colleges in London, despite being non-selective. Its success is in part due to its highly supportive, bespoke educational provision, with all classes one to one or in small groups. Students are supported inclusively according to their individual needs, with subject teachers adapting their teaching to each individual student. Pastoral responsibilities are taken as seriously as academic achievement, and a history of superb parent, student and staff feedback clearly indicates a high level of satisfaction with the support and provision on offer.

Our teachers are instrumental in the academic progress their students make and have the satisfaction of knowing they really do make a difference.  The success of our approach is also born out by our results (A level progress/ results/ university destinations) and we outstrip our competitors by a long measure.

The diversity and range of accomplishments amongst our teachers all contribute to the unique atmosphere at Westminster Tutors and provide a source of inspiration for our students.

What we are looking for:

We are looking for a teacher who is able to teach both Biology and Chemistry A level (part-time/ paid hourly).

The successful candidate will likely be a qualified teacher, with experience either leading a department, or willing to take on responsibility as lead teacher for one or both subjects.  We require a good degree/ postgraduate degree in Biology, Chemistry or closely related subjects, as well as a proven ability to engage and inspire students aged 16+.

Please note that our chosen A level board is OCR for both subjects but we also teach other exam boards. Experience teaching a range of boards is an advantage, although versatility and the willingness to take on new challenges will serve just as well.

Our students have a broad range of needs, although the majority go on to Russell Group universities.  Experience teaching and preparing students for highly competitive UCAS applications would be an advantage, as would be ability to support students with BMAT and Oxbridge interviews.  Additionally, experience teaching A level students with SEND including specific learning difficulties and those on the autism spectrum is another advantage.

Coronavirus update:

We are small, safe and socially distanced because we do almost all of our teaching one-to-one.  Our approach also means that we can seamlessly move to teaching online if required.

We have  had 99% participation from staff and students to twice-weekly lateral flow testing, and our current staff say that they have found our covid procedures very reassuring.

Application Process:

If this sounds like the job for you we would love to hear from you as soon as possible!

** Please note we are looking to make an immediate appointment and will be interviewing shortlisted candidates prior to the application closing date **

Please fill in all the fields on the TES Quick Apply form and include a brief relevant statement in support of your application to Westminster Tutors.

Westminster Tutors was founded in 1934 and is one of the oldest remaining tutorial colleges in the country.  The college now operates as an independent sixth form college admitting students aged 16-25 and, while it was originally based in Westminster, it is now situated in South Kensington in two Victorian terrace houses.

Westminster Tutors retains its long-standing reputation for academic excellence and offering highly qualified tutors who ensure each student reaches their full academic potential.   Much teaching is still one-to-one, while some classes are offered in very small groups of two or three students.  We have high aspirations for all of our students and our approach speaks for itself: attainment, added value and onward higher education destinations are exceptional.

The maximum capacity at the college is 45 students, which means each student receives superb pastoral support according to individual needs, and staff find their work highly rewarding as levels of engagement are so high.  The college has a strong ethos of inclusion and a good number of students have special educational needs, mental health needs or neurological differences such as autism or ADHD.  Westminster Tutors is academically non-selective and admissions are therefore based on whether the student has academic aspirations and motivation in line with the college’s offering and whether we are able we are able to meet the student’s individual needs through our strong system of pastoral support, which includes mentoring for students with additional needs.

Our staff find their work truly rewarding due to the very high levels of engagement and the fact that they can enjoy the impact that their expertise and commitment has on each and every student.  The students' behaviour is exemplary and they love being at the college, while 100% of our parents would recommend us.

Westminster Tutors really is a unique institution and it is a pleasure to work for us!
