Established almost 500 years ago, the College of Richard Collyer is forward-thinking in every way – we are a Beacon college and we were rated Outstanding by Ofsted at our last inspection. Our mission is simple: to deliver the best possible education to our 2,000 students aged 16 to 19, and our achievements speak for themselves – in 2018, our A level high grade rate was 60% and with ALPS 2 for value added, we are the sixth best sixth form college in the country.

A great college deserves a great location, and we can certainly boast that: we’re close to the centre of the historic market town of Horsham and under an hour from London by train. We’re a supportive community rather than just a place to work, and we’re deeply committed to the professional development of our staff.

We are looking to appoint a well-qualified and enthusiastic Biologist to join the Biology department to cover maternity leave from September 2019 until July 2020. Weekly contact time is 14.5 hours which could be worked over 3 days per week.

Biology is a thriving subject area within the Faculty of Science and Mathematics and joining us, you will be expected to contribute within the following qualification range: A level Biology and GCSE Biology. Biology is taught in a suite of three well-equipped laboratories and has its own interactive whiteboard and projector in each lab. There is a technician dedicated to Biology. The department is well resourced, and all teachers follow a unified scheme of work. Staff are expected to share materials for teaching and assessment under the direction of the Head of Subject. The AS/A level courses follow OCR specification A and GCSE Biology will follow the AQA course. There are approximately 150 students in the 1st Year cohort and 140 students following in the 2nd Year cohort.

Qualifications: Good degree in Biology or a related discipline together with a recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, DET).

Experience: Current or recent experience of teaching A levels to 16-19 year-olds is desirable.

Knowledge and Skills: Range of A level and GCSE syllabuses. An excellent understanding of Biology and the ability to use Information Technology to support teaching and learning.

Personal Qualities: Excellent teamwork and communication skills. A flexible approach and well-organised work patterns.

Motivation and Expectations: A commitment to high standards, to work collaboratively with staff and encourage the growth and outstanding academic achievement of students.

Members of the teaching staff are usually also personal tutors. Tutors monitor progress and offer support and guidance to twenty-five students. The ability to contribute to the enrichment programme would also be welcome.
