Job overview

Contract Term: We offer a permanent contract after a one-year probationary period.

Closing Date: 19th November (early applications are welcome)

What we seek:

The English College in Prague seeks a committed and creative teacher to join its thriving Science Faculty. We are looking for a candidate who can enthuse students, many of whom are academically excellent, and deliver lessons that are both exciting and rigorous.

The candidate will have experience of teaching Biology from KS3 to KS5. They should have experience of working in an academically aspirational school or the desire to do so. Ideally, they will have knowledge of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme and experience of helping students to prepare for studying Medicine or for Oxbridge interviews. Previous IB teaching experience is preferable but not essential as all the necessary IB training will be provided. Experience shows us that a flexible and resourceful A-Level teacher will be able to deliver the IB syllabus effectively.

We expect the successful candidate will be someone who has full Qualified Teacher Status (or equivalent). Very importantly, they will be an active participant in the Teacher & Learning Groups - timetabled periods where small cross-curricular groups of colleagues meet to discuss and conduct an annual cycle of classroom-based pedagogical research.

The school is at the very early stages of developing its own Pre-IB Programme (KS4) to replace IGCSEs and therefore an interest in innovative and bespoke curriculum development would be a big advantage.

We will look at all applications on an individual basis and the role of Head of Biology might be available for the right candidate, as would a delayed start date if January 2019 is too soon for contractual or logistical reasons.

Biology lessons are taught in our recently refurbished laboratories, with a strong emphasis on practical and investigation work. ICT is integrated throughout the curriculum at the College, so we are seeking someone who is excited by the possibilities provided by technology as an addition to, rather than a replacement for, more traditional teaching techniques.

The right candidate will be joining a diverse and dedicated team who maintain a dynamic learning and extra-curricular environment in which the needs and talents of the individual student are recognised and nurtured.

Short School Statement

We are an unusual, exciting and academic HMC secondary school educating both Czech and international students. While we prepare our students for a small number of core IGCSEs, and Common European Framework language exams, our main focus is on delivering success in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and the Czech Maturita qualification. Each year, our graduates go on to study at universities in the UK (usually including Oxbridge), continental Europe and North America. We offer the successful candidate adventure, challenge and good remuneration in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

Criminal Records Bureau Disclosure and References Statement

The English College in Prague is totally committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and young people and expects the same from its employees. All new staff will be subject to enhanced DBS clearance or similar, depending on their country of origin or previous employment. Identity checks, employment checks and qualifications checks all form a non-negotiable part of the recruitment process. Any gaps in employment will be examined, and we will require at least two references, including one from your most recent Headteacher. Safeguarding and child protection training is given on arrival and the induction process also follows UK best practice in this area.

How to apply:

Email the Headmaster, Dr. Nigel Brown, at headmaster@englishcollege.cz  with a short covering letter and a full c.v. Please include a complete career history as well as the names, addresses, email addresses and telephone numbers of two referees, one of whom should be your current or most recent Headteacher.

Only applicants selected for interview will be contacted. Shortlisted candidates will be notified on or before 19th November. Interviews will be conducted either by Skype, or in person in London or Prague (travel expenses will be reimbursed), depending on the circumstances.

The English College in Prague is a unique and special school. It was founded in 1994 in the wake of the Velvet Revolution as a moderately selective independent day school, offering a British-style Grammar School education and holistic pastoral support to students aged 13-19 (Years 8 - 13 in UK terms). Although all non-language lessons are taught in English it is also a part of the Czech school system. The College is a prominent member of HMC and unlike many international schools is a non-profit-making, fully incorporated charity. Around 70% of its students are Czech and 30% are international students from over twenty different countries.

The College prepares students for a mixture of IGCSE exams, Common European Framework language exams (DELF, Instituto Cervantes and Goethe Institut), as well as ensures that all students in Years 1-4 follow an authorised Czech Curriculum. All students study for the International Baccalaureate in Years 5 and 6 and just over half of the cohort also takes the Czech Maturita examination in addition to the IB. The College has more than twenty-five years’ experience of teaching the IB and many of our staff are IB examiners.

The teaching staff consists of a dynamic mix of recent and more experienced graduates, the vast majority of whom are native English speakers or have been trained in the UK system.  A particular benefit, which is relatively unusual for schools abroad, is that, following a successful probationary period, we offer permanent contracts to our staff. We value relationships between student and teacher and of course how both of these connect with parents. We also actively promote a culture of academic aspiration and individualised expectations.

The College traces its traditions back to the Prague English Grammar School which existed in Prague from the 1920s but suffered closure under both the Nazis and the Communists. It seeks to maintain the traditions and rigour of an English Grammar School within the Czech educational framework and its governors are drawn from both the UK and the Czech Republic, symbolised by its two founding patrons – former President Vaclav Havel and Charles, Prince of Wales.
