Job overview

The Head and Trustees wish to appoint a Teacher of Biology to join our outstanding Science faculty. As a DFE Flexible Working Ambassador School we are keen to offer this as a part time post (most likely at 0.6fte/3 days). We welcome applications from experienced teachers but also ECTs for whom coaching and support will be provided. The ability to teach Biology to A-level is desirable. There is a possibility of further hours in September 2025 (or perhaps in 2024) for candidates who can offer some chemistry/maths/computing or PSHE teaching. Please be clear in your application your experience in teaching any additional subjects.

The Science Faculty is very experienced and all teachers are degree holders in their relevant disciplines. Every student in KS3 studies all three sciences as separate lessons with specialists and all students currently follow this pathway to GCSE (100% triple science entry). At A-level, biology is one of the most popular subject choices with 3 A-level classes in each year group. Chemistry often has 3 classes and there are about 15-20 physicists in each of the A-level cohorts. This post is offered owing to a continued growth in external applicants for Post-16 education and biology is the most popular subject for 2024-25.

We are very much a family and a team at NGHS; our colleagues work exceptionally hard to help each student to achieve their potential and they also support each other. We take staff well-being extremely seriously and our Well-being Charter is included in this pack to show you what we do.

NGHS is an outstanding girls’ grammar school. We were very recently inspected by Ofsted in November 2022 and the school was judged outstanding in every category, placing us in the top 3% of schools. Please read the report here; you will see why we are so proud of our staff and students. We are also the 2020 West Midlands Secondary School of the Year and have recently won a number of accolades rewarding our work in supporting Mental Health, Holocaust Education, the Be Kind Award and the AcSEED Award.

Our governing body is incredibly supportive and experienced. Their drive and ambition for the school keeps us on our toes, but they are passionate about enhancing opportunities for all students. We are heavily oversubscribed and hold an annual entrance test. We have, on average, 120 girls in each year group. The sixth form is also oversubscribed and we take students from a number of 11-16 and 11-18 high schools as well, of course, as our own Year 11s.

Importantly, NGHS believes in offering an all-round education and the successful applicant will be committed to extra-curricular opportunities. S/he will be expected to contribute to the school’s varied programme within their subject or beyond.

Please contact Executive Head, Mr M J Scott, for any more information via jobs@nghs.org.uk.

Please note the school is closed from 22 March - 7 April for Easter, but email contact is still possible via the address above.

Closing date - Monday 8 April at 9am. However, we urge applicants to apply ASAP as we may choose to close the advert early should we receive sufficient applications to shortlist for interview.

NGHS is an equal opportunities employer. We are committed to the equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy/maternity, race, religion or belief. We particularly welcome applications from colleagues from under-represented backgrounds. The successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced DBS, Barred List check and other recruitment checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education Safer Recruitment practices. This includes sourcing police checks for any period of time spent abroad and social media account checks.

In 2019, the School was successful in gaining £2.3m to expand further under the government's Selective Schools Expansion Fund. An additional 30 pupils per year joined the school at Year 7 from September 2021 and an ambitious building programme (dining room, kitchen, science laboratory, computer suite and four classrooms) opened in January 2022.

The school’s sixth form is also open to students from other local schools. Newport Girls' High School converted to an academy in 2012 and operates under its own trust.

Values and vision

Newport Girls' High School takes great pride in its strong reputation for academic excellence. The secondary school works hard to provide a high-quality curriculum with a broad range of subjects. Teachers also seek to ensure that pupils have a caring and comfortable environment in which to learn.

The school day at Newport runs from 8.50am until 3.45pm in order to make time for daily assemblies and longer breaks. A wide variety of extra-curricular activities is available including sports such as fencing, netball and hockey.

Students join NGHS from Newport, Telford, Shrewsbury, Wolverhampton, Stafford, Market Drayton and villages in between. Around 40% of students live in Newport.

Ofsted report (November 2022)

"Leaders and teachers are highly ambitious for all pupils throughout the school, especially those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). They make sure that the most important knowledge and skills in each subject are taught in the most effective sequence."

"Pupils rapidly develop the exceptionally positive learning behaviours expected by leaders and teachers. There is no disruption of lessons."
