Job overview

Millfield School is seeking to appoint a committed and suitably qualified Teacher of Biology from January 2021 on a part-time basis. You will teach between 18 – 22 periods per fortnight. We will consider applications from candidates seeking a permanent or temporary appointment.

As our Teacher of Biology, you will need to be organised and enthusiastic, and could be either newly qualified or an experienced teacher. You will be able to offer Biology teaching to pupils from Year 9 to Year 13 across the full ability range, and will demonstrate a genuine interest in the subject and the way in which it is taught. The ability to teach other sciences (Chemistry or Physics) to at least GCSE level is beneficial but not essential.

The department is a very happy and rewarding environment in which to work. Applicants should be interested in sharing good practice and offering new ideas to the schemes of work at every level of the curriculum.

Founded in 1935, Millfield’s vision is to be the world leader for the development of children. There are nearly 1,300 students at the senior school (year 9 to U6), with a 3:1 ratio of boarding to day. Although essentially a rural British school, 20 per cent of Millfield students are international and come from more than 70 countries.

Set in over 100 acres of grounds, Millfield’s size brings great opportunity and the facilities are unmatched in the UK: an Olympic-sized swimming pool, golf courses, indoor centres for tennis, golf and cricket  and an equestrian centre; concert hall, recording studio, theatre, art gallery, hi-tech Science block and outstanding teaching facilities; and high quality boarding accommodation.

If you are interested, an application form and further details are available from:  millfieldschool.com/vacancies

Closing date: Noon on 7th October 2020.

Millfield School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Offers of appointment are subject to satisfactory references and DBS clearance.

The modern world is highly competitive and the way we prepare our children for its demands is more important than ever. Young people today are subject to great pressures and it takes strong personalities to avoid the traps that life has lying in wait. Hence a good school must seek to develop confidence and maturity in all its pupils whatever their strengths and weaknesses.

All individuals have different needs and therefore a variety of opportunities must be available to enable each one to achieve success. They must learn to apply themselves to academic work but must also be encouraged to express their other talents.

With its outstanding facilities, a staff:pupil ratio of 1:7.5, an extraordinary range of academic courses and the unrivalled strength of its extra-curricular programme, Millfield strives to achieve all these aims. It also seeks to move with the times whilst maintaining the important traditions of good manners, discipline and respect for others.

We pride ourselves on the richness and diversity of the Millfield experience as well as the friendly atmosphere within our community.
