Harris Westminster students expect great things of themselves; they aim high and meet their targets, gaining places on the most competitive university course and apprenticeships, and from those courses into elite careers. They understand that they are part of a community where we look after each other and support each other to overcome hardships and to thrive. They aim to make their mark on the world for the long term and learn that they can have a positive and lasting impact. Students from different backgrounds, cultures, and lifestyles work together and listen to each other to understand more deeply how these differences affect our experiences, to overcome prejudices and create a more equal society. During their time at the school they develop a love of learning and acquire the habits of enquiry, knowledge acquisition, and scholarship.

School summary

Harris Westminster Sixth Form is a unique collaboration between two leading lights of UK education, the Harris Federation and Westminster School. Based in the heart of London, we combine the strengths of Westminster School in teaching academically able pupils with the Harris Federation’s experience in establishing and running outstanding maintained sector schools across London.

Harris Westminster Sixth Form opened in September 2014 with 138 students and since then has grown into a vibrant community of scholars with 600 students representing every borough of London and every conceivable ethnic and social group. 70% of students gain places at Russell Group universities with an increasing number securing Oxbridge destinations (nineteen in 2018 with thirty eight offers for 2019). The school is heavily oversubscribed with six applicants per place and students competing to join this enriching, supportive, and academically stretching environment.

Academy Ethos

Ambition. Perseverance. Legacy. After two years of outstanding education and personal development our students will not just be ready to face the world but to change it.

Ambition: Our students will have high expectations of themselves. They will believe in their own abilities and in their capacity to learn, developing new skills and knowledge. They will be unafraid of competition, seeking out new challenges and collaborating successfully to meet them. Their long term goals will be stretching and exciting and they will know how to take the next step on the road to meeting them.

Perseverance: Our students will understand the value of hard work and will be able to concentrate on medium and long term goals. They will not be dismayed by mistakes but will learn from them and seek opportunities to use their learning. They will use different approaches to solve problems and will not give up if they don’t succeed at the first attempt. They will encourage each other and accept encouragement: they will celebrate not just their own successes but those of their peers.

Legacy: Our students will have a strong moral code and a desire to help others.  They will understand the impact that their words and actions have and make their choices accordingly. They will learn about cultures and groups other than their own and will be interested in the ideas of others. They will have the courage to stand up for what is right even when it is difficult and leave enterprises of all kinds and scales better for their involvement.
