Job overview

Here at Mascalls Academy, we have a rare opportunity for a Teacher of Business Studies and ICT to join us from September 2018.  Business Studies is a small department of two, however, part of Luther King College which includes mathematics, computing, art and performing arts. Business is a popular subject attracting large numbers at GCSE, A Level and Vocational.  Mascalls has four colleges each named after a risk-taking pioneer.  Each college is led by a Head of College, Deputy Head of College, Head of Pastoral and Assistant Head of Pastoral, all of whom are qualified teachers.  This team is responsible for the academic and pastoral support of the 350 pupils attached to each college; this structure allows for a greater level of individual support for the pupils within that college.  This role would require the applicant to be an advisor/form tutor to support the ethos of their college and the development of their form group.  Each half term we hold inter-college competitions in a variation of disciplines from sport, numeracy, spelling, debating, technology and enterprise; these competitions culminate in the end of year sports day where the college champion is crowned.

As a Teacher of Business Studies you will be required to teach academic and vocational business to all key stages.  You will be required to keep abreast of educational theory, to inform your teaching, understand the value of knowledge in the curriculum and the ability to apply that knowledge in a contextual manner.  We require our teachers to understand the process of cognition and meta-cognition when planning valuable educational experiences for the pupils.

In addition, the academy has developed a number of business links both locally and further afield. Our business partners work closely with the business studies department as well as offering business mentoring and careers support.

We’d like to hear from you if you are:

  • Looking to work in an amazing school.
  • Have a ‘can do’ attitude.
  • Are reflective.

What it’s like to work with us:  Mascalls Academy is one of the highest performing non-selective schools in Kent.  At Mascalls the art of teaching is alive and well, classrooms are calm and pupils are well behaved.  CPD is focused on pedagogy, underpinned by up to date research.  Teachers at Mascalls continually develop their craft with the support of their peers and the senior leadership team, are treated as professionals and given the autonomy to challenge, to take risks and to experiment. Mascalls delegates its feedback policy to each department, eliminating the need for persistent deep dive marking, which has resulted in decreased teacher workload.  Mascalls looks after its staff offering free, fortnightly, holistic therapies, free use of the school gym, staff football and netball teams, mindfulness and meditation sessions, tea and coffee made for you in the staff room and possibly the best school caterers in the world.

If this sounds appealing, we look forward to receiving your application.  Please consult the full Recruitment Pack by clicking here.

Being part of Leigh Academies Trust:  As part of Leigh Academies Trust you will have the opportunity to collaborate with your peers and share best practice at academy level and across the whole Trust.  This is an important part of our vision as we know through experience that we perform better when we work together.  You will also be expected to undertake regular self-development to continue your professional development and hopefully progress further within the organisation.  As part of the cluster structure, all of our academies are grouped together in key geographical areas to enable them to be able to support each other and share resources.  It also offers staff access to career opportunities across the Trust allowing them to progress their career without switching employers.

The academy is committed to safeguarding children and successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check.  Our commitment to safeguarding is underpinned by robust processes and checks which are in place across the Trust.

Mascalls Academy is a secondary school at the heart of the community and our small school model ensures that each and every student gets the personal support and challenge they need to reach their full potential. The academy is divided into four colleges – Shackleton, Earhart, Luther King and Marie Curie Sixth Form College each having their own personality and range of specialisms, allowing them to be unique.

Mascalls Academy is a high achieving institution. Our most recent Ofsted inspection notes “ambitious leadership has established an ethos where staff are committed to driving standards up”, that Mascalls is a “happy place to be” and that “staff feel valued”. Our judgement that we are a ‘Good’ school with ‘Outstanding’ leadership and behaviour is accurate. It is our vision to become ‘Outstanding’ in every category.

Mascalls Academy is a dynamic and exciting place to work and the fantastic leadership team are committed to making it great for people at all stages in their careers. Our building and facilities are a mix of designs with two new buildings being modern, light and airy giving the academy a unique and special character.

Values

“Our values decide our character; our character decides our value.” James Kerr.

Personal discipline

  • Respect – for self and others
  • Determination – to succeed
  • Resilience – a commitment to personal development in spite of setbacks

Personal discipline is not expecting somebody else to do your job for you.  It teaches you not to expect things handed to you and even sometimes, in order to succeed, to do things now when you really ‘want to do it tomorrow’.

At Mascalls personal discipline underpins our character, we value respect, determination and resilience and understand that the combination of those characteristics, applied daily make success a repeatable experience.

Vision

Personal development

  • High expectations – of self and of others
  • Continual improvement – steps to success
  • Celebrate success – big or small

We are all caretakers of our legacy, as students continue their journey with us they are encouraged to build on the successes of our past and aspire to new standards for our future.   Students and staff, as leaders, drive and insist on an environment which promotes the behaviours needed for success at school and beyond.   At Mascalls we create a culture for personal development – through high expectations, a commitment to continual improvement and through celebrating our many successes. We celebrate our achievements and learn from our mistakes knowing that our collective character drives culture, our reputation and turns it into something we can be proud of.
