Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic full-time teacher of Chemistry, to start in September 2019. This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly successful Department within a strong and supportive Faculty.  They will have plenty of energy and enthusiasm and will also understand the commitment required in a large and vibrant day and boarding school.

The Chemistry Department currently consists of  two full time teachers, with considerable contributions from a numbers of physics and biology specialists, each based in a specialist laboratory, and a full time Chemistry Technician; this post seeks to re-balance the science faculty with a third Chemistry-specialist teacher.  Laboratories are equipped with projectors, and either an interactive whiteboard or apple TV. We also benefit from a well-equipped prep room.

All students study chemistry as a separate subject.  From years 7 to 8 the Exploring Science scheme is used to build a strong foundation for the following years. From year 9, students are taught in sets and work towards the CIE IGCSE in coordinated science.

Chemistry is popular choice at sixth form level with a proud record of successfully preparing students for the most competitive degree courses in medicine, veterinary science, dentistry, pharmacy and Oxbridge degree courses in chemistry. There are approximately 40 students taking AQA A-Level chemistry and we expect the vast majority of these to attain a top A-level grade at the end of the course.

Please refer to the attached  Recruitment Pack for further information.

About Woodhouse Grove School

Situated in beautiful parkland between Leeds and Bradford, The Grove is one school with three parts and provides a first class all-round education for boys and girls, day pupils and boarders, from ages 11 to 18. Our preparatory school, Brontë House, lays excellent foundations for ages 5 to 11; whilst Ashdown Lodge, provides fully-flexible, year-round, full and part-time, pre-prep and nursery facilities for 2 – 5 year olds.

With 1100 pupils we are large enough to provide a full curriculum and wide range of activities under the guidance of well qualified teachers, but small enough for each pupil to be known individually and to make their mark.  We offer continuity of learning from nursery to the threshold of university and career. Day pupils and boarders alike enjoy the extensive facilities and special atmosphere.  We are a co-educational community, in which boys and girls can flourish, learning together and being prepared properly for the world beyond school.

Wherever a child’s ability lies, we will nurture and encourage its development. We seek to balance youthful idealism with a realistic sense of what is available and attainable.

Our purpose is expressed in the following aims:
  • To develop the academic potential of each pupil, successfully and enjoyably
  • To foster mature and caring behaviour and high standards
  • To develop talents and skills whether physical, technical, social or artistic

We hope that our pupils will go into a world of opportunity with the confidence born of achievement in the range of activities open to them, and with the strength of character developed by their sustained exposure to challenges and experiences in a caring and secure setting.

Our traditional outlook reflects the school’s Christian values, our forward thinking combines with good facilities and a splendid environment to provide the best education for your child within a strong school community.

Visitors to Woodhouse Grove often comment on our friendly and purposeful atmosphere - we value that and hope you will too.
