We are currently seeking a Chemistry teacher for our Senior School Voorschoten (SSV) campus to cover maternity leave from 28 August 2023 for two Terms.

If you are an ambitious, enthusiastic and innovative teacher who is looking for a new challenge in an international context, then this position could be the perfect match for you.

The School:

The British School in the Netherlands is arranged into four separate campuses. The Senior School Voorschoten is a large, modern and very well equipped campus in Voorschoten, which serves international students as well as local students from the surrounding area.

Our senior school is situated in the town of Voorschoten, between the Hague and Leiden with excellent public transport, motorway and bicycle connections from the surrounding areas (10 minutes by train to the centre of the Hague). This is an exciting time to join one of the oldest British International schools in Europe as we continue to cement our reputation both locally and globally. We largely follow the British National Curriculum at KS3 and KS4 and offer multiple post-16 academic pathways (including IB, A-Level and BTEC) serving nearly 900 students of 80 different nationalities. Our student body is motivated to succeed, our families are hugely supportive and our colleagues are welcoming, innovative and of the highest calibre. Our students’ destinations vary greatly, including Oxford, Cambridge and LSE as well as the leading Universities in the Netherlands and globally.

The Role:

We are looking for a qualified and experienced teacher of Chemistry who can teach Chemistry in Year 9, at GCSE (AQA Separate and Combined Science: Trilogy), IB and A level as well as Combined Science in Years 7 and 8. As part of this role there is also an expectation of being fully involved in the development of the department and participating in the running of extracurricular activities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • You will need to have teaching experience across a range of key stages, and it would be advantageous to have experience of teaching UK curricula (GCSE, A Level and IB);
  • You will need to be able to adapt your teaching to meet the international environment of the school;
  • You should be passionate about developing practically able students and so confident to deliver a wide range of practical demonstrations and class activities;
  • If you have experience of teaching students for whom English is not their first language, this would be a considerable advantage;
  • You will be confident integrating EdTech into your teaching or be willing to develop these skills.

What we offer:

  • A modern environment for teaching and learning;
  • Excellent induction and CPD;
  • Surface Pro device and state-of-the-art ICT provision;
  • Supportive line management;
  • Opportunities to link with other subject areas in school and other schools internationally.

Life in The Netherlands:

The Netherlands is one of the most welcoming of all EU member countries to professionals working abroad and is a very pleasant country in which to live and work. The Netherlands regularly tops surveys on child wellbeing.

The working language of The BSN is English. The Dutch are excellent linguists and English is widely spoken by around 70% of the population.

Transport services and connections are excellent - our campuses are located in The Hague, just 30 or so minutes from Amsterdam Schiphol airport, or in the other direction, from the Hoek of Holland ferry terminal. Public transport is fast, reliable and generally good value for money, but many choose the truly Dutch option of cycling, making good use of the highly developed network of cycle paths.

There is much more you can find out about the school and living in The Netherlands from our website - www.britishschool.nl

Applications should include a CV and letter of motivation (no longer than two sides of A4), addressed to Patrick Heuff, Headteacher, explaining your interest in the post and how your experience and personal attributes will be a good match for this important role at the BSN.
