Education is provided for boys from 4 through to 18 years, with girls 16 - 18 years joining for Sixth Form.

Birkdale is known for its high academic standards, with virtually all Sixth Form leavers going on to university. The school provides, within a distinctively Christian ethos, a wide range of out of school activities to educate the whole person. Pastoral care is given a strong emphasis, and music, drama and sport (including outdoor pursuits) are available to high standards.

Set in pleasant surroundings 1.5 miles from the city centre and 4 miles from the Peak District National Park, Birkdale attracts pupils from an area bounded by Wakefield, Rotherham, Retford and Matlock. Transport, shared with a nearby girls’ school, is available from outlying areas. Up to 10% of leavers go on to Oxford or Cambridge each year.

Professionally trained staff are available to give specialised help to those with special needs. Scholarships (academic and music) are available at 11 and 16, up to 25% of fees, and other bursaries and discounts may be offered up to 100% of fees.

Whilst the Head of Birkdale carries responsibility for both the Senior (11-18) and Preparatory schools, the Head of the Preparatory School (who is a member of IAPS) enjoys considerable autonomy and holds responsibility for the leadership and management of the Preparatory School.
