Teacher of Classics

Permanent, full time, required for September 2020

Competitive Salary depending on qualifications and experience

Queenswood Classics Department is seeking an enthusiastic, passionate, and inspiring teacher of Classics. The successful candidate will be required to teach Classical Civilisation and Latin up to GCSE standard, but ideally Latin to A-Level standard. Applicants who teach Ancient Greek, or who are willing to learn, would be especially welcome.

Queenswood Classics Department is a growing and thriving part of the school, with compulsory Classics for all of KS3. We have classes of Latin and Classical Civilisation in both GCSE and A Level, and we are currently teaching Greek to GCSE off timetable, with a goal to introducing Ancient Greek to the GCSE curriculum in 2021.

The Classics department is one with a very strong reputation within the school, and one which is growing in popularity every year, with alternating annual trips to Greece and Italy, along with closer trips to Verulamium and Colchester. We are looking for an applicant who wants to be involved in the exciting progress of a relatively new department, and someone who can bring new ideas and enthusiasm to help continue this expansion.

This position would be suitable for an NQT or a more experienced teacher. All staff are required to be part of the co-curricular and pastoral life of the school, with every teacher being assigned to a form. Each teacher is also assigned to a Competitive House and they are encouraged to support their House in a variety of activities throughout the year.

Members of the department work collaboratively, and as a team, providing a supportive environment for any new member of staff. There is also a comprehensive NQT programme, and a focus on the CPD of all staff, incorporating new ICT techniques into every lesson.

In addition to the teaching role, may like to apply for a Head of Year responsibility.

This is an exciting opportunity for career development that will involve leading a team of tutors and overseeing the academic and pastoral welfare of a Year Group.

No previous experience is necessary for the Head of Year role.

Closing date for applications: 21 February 2020

Queenswood is committed to safeguarding the welfare of children and all applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service

Queenswood is a progressive boarding and day school for around 480 girls, aged between 11 and 18, where boarders make up more than half of the School.  An all round education focuses on equipping the girls with all the life skills required of women in the 21st century.  Within a caring and supportive framework, the girls enjoy a dynamic academic curriculum, supported by a diverse and exciting extra-curricular programme.

It is a warm and friendly community where everybody knows each other.  Girls thrive within a nurturing house structure tailored to meet the needs of the girls as they progress from the Junior School, through the Middle School, and on into the Sixth Form.  Day girls are fully integrated within the houses, are able to enjoy all the facilities and opportunities available to the boarders, but choose to go home at night after a packed school day.  There is a flexible approach to boarding to meet the varying needs of individual families; girls may choose to be full boarders or just to remain in School for four or five nights a week.

Queenswood is proud to be an international community with an outward looking approach; overseas girls make up around 20% of the pupils.  We welcome girls of all faiths and none, recognise and support an individual’s adherence to her own faith, but expect all girls to embrace the School’s broad spiritual ethos.

The girls are ambitious high achievers, winning places at the top universities both at home and abroad prior to embarking upon a range of exciting careers.  Individual talent also flourishes in sport and the creative and performing arts.  As important as individual achievement is the development of a sense of responsibility for each other and the world in which they live.  Queenswood girls are thoughtful young people with a secure set of values and self-confidence.

The beautiful Queenswood estate provides the perfect educational environment.  Being just 25 minutes from central London, it also has the advantage of easy access to the cultural richness of the capital.  At the same time, its proximity to major international airports provides ease of travel for both our overseas girls and for those participating in the School’s foreign exchange and visit programmes.
