Job overview

Part-time

Start date: September 2023

Loughborough Grammar School is excited to recruit an inspirational teacher of Classics to teach across the age range from Year 7 to GCSE.

It is not necessary to have a teaching qualification for this post, but it is essential to have a very good knowledge of Latin and Classical Civilisation.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join an exceptionally dynamic and vibrant Classics Department. There may also be opportunities to teach Classical Greek for a suitably skilled candidate.

We are a forward looking and innovative department with a keen interest in developing teaching and learning. Candidates new to teaching would be very well supported and experienced teachers would have a wealth of opportunities to develop their own experiences and enrich the Classics curriculum.

We also welcome applications from graduate and post graduate students with a passion for Classics, who are interested in gaining experience in teaching.

Latin and Classical Civilisation are very popular subjects at LGS with 4 GCSE Latin classes, 2 GCSE Ancient Greek classes and 2 GCSE Classical Civilisation classes in the current Key Stage 4. A Level is taught in co-ed sets with Loughborough High School and we currently have students taking A Levels in Latin, Classical Greek and Classical Civilisation. Our results are outstanding at all levels.

The post is offered as a 0.4 position, but we are flexible in what we can offer depending on the candidate.

The post holds the option of being a one year full-time residential post for a suitable candidate who is interested in engaging in the wider life of this busy boarding and day school. This would suit a recent graduate who is looking to gain experience of teaching in an exciting and dynamic School.

For the academic year 23-24 there is also the exciting option to teach across the Loughborough Schools Foundation by teaching Latin and Classics (up to an additional 0.28 timetable) at Loughborough High School. This additional teaching opportunity is for a period of one year.

Loughborough Grammar School

Loughborough Grammar School is a leading independent day school with a small boarding element. The School provides education to boys aged 10–18 and is one of the four Loughborough Schools Foundation. Staff benefit from reduced fees for their children in any of the four schools. The School is situated in the university town of Loughborough in the East Midlands: one of the rare regions in England where property prices remain at an affordable level for teachers and young families.

This is a vibrant school for intellectually curious pupils. With an abundance of first-class facilities and outstanding teaching staff, we deliver a high quality holistic education, where the co-curricular is valued alongside academic achievements.

Objective: our objective is to be the school of first-choice for boys throughout the East Midlands. Our aims are that pupils become:

• intellectually curious lifelong learners with the confidence to be innovative

• healthy young men with a sense of perspective, whose emotional wellbeing is assured through development of their self-esteem

• independently-minded young adults who demonstrate good judgement in their decisions and integrity in their relationships with other people

• engaged citizens with a healthy respect for others and their differences

• self-disciplined, adaptable leaders and team players, who embrace challenge and change

Ethos and Religion:

Although the school is proud of its Christian heritage dating back to 1495, Loughborough Grammar School welcomes pupils from all faiths (and of none) and makes provision for their spiritual welfare. The ‘spirit’ of Loughborough Grammar School is nurtured by fostering good relationships between all members of the community based on the core values of mutual respect, kindness and the Golden Rule of treating others as we would like to be treated ourselves.

The acquisition of a moral compass, so dear to our founders five centuries ago, remains of fundamental importance. However, we are also determined to offer boys a thoroughly modern learning experience, benefitting from first-class facilities and an understanding of the importance of an all-round education which helps to develop the emotional intelligence required to make a success of their personal and professional lives.
