Job overview

Teacher of Classics

Leicester Grammar School is one of the UK's top-performing co-educational HMC independent day schools. Our pupils enjoy exceptional opportunities within and beyond the classroom; we have high expectations, but the success of our community stems, above all, from a culture of aspiration and care. We attract positive, polite and grounded children, who display a strong sense of respect for one another and for staff. Concerns over behaviour are rare; our pupils thrive in a calm and purposeful community, well supported and guided by staff.

Starting in September, this presents an excellent opportunity for either an experienced teacher or a new entrant to the profession to join a thriving department. The successful candidate will be able to teach across the full age range, sparking enthusiasm and understanding among our younger pupils, whilst helping older students to turn their inherent interest in the Classics into success in public examinations. You will also be able to teach Latin and Classical Civilisation through to A Level. While the ability to offer Greek would be an advantage, this is not essential.

We are happy to consider both experienced candidates and those who are at an early stage of their career. We also invite applications from unqualified graduates who would like to gain their PGCE with the support of the school.

Besides teaching, you would also contribute fully to the pastoral and co-curricular life of the Classics department and Leicester Grammar School generally.

A snapshot of our Classics Department

We are an effective team of talented Classicists, who share a belief in the power of our subjects to challenge, engage and equip learners to become curious and critical about the world around them. We are also academically ambitious on behalf of our pupils, using positive and effective teaching to help each realise their full potential. The successful candidate will share in this love for the Classics and understand how to help students become more interested in and serious about the study of the ancient world, whether from a linguistic or cultural perspective.

Applying to be Teacher of Classics

If you are interested in teaching Classics in a supportive, caring, and academically engaging environment, you are advised to apply early as we reserve the right to close this vacancy earlier than the specified deadline, if a suitable candidate is found.

The closing date for applications is 15 April 2024. Interviews are currently planned for the following week, but may take place earlier.

Please note that tours of the school form part of the interview for short-listed candidates. Also, references will be obtained prior to interview.

Leicester Grammar School Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and this is reflected in our recruitment procedures.
