Job overview

The Department

The Classics Department presently offers courses in Latin through to IB Diploma Level and Classical Civilisation through to A Level, following the Cambridge Latin Course up to GCSE, supplemented by in-department material. There is a vast array of audio-visual resources, and the Classics section in the School Library is comprehensive. It is vital that the person appointed is entirely comfortable with the delivery of the curriculum through ICT, as the on-line version of the Cambridge Latin Course will be used going forward.

There are regular visits to Fishbourne Roman Palace, Bignor Roman villa, Bath, the British museum and to lectures and theatre performances in London.  The department has led overseas expeditions to Italy and Greece, the most recent one in Spring 2017. All of these trips have been well supported and have become a popular addition to the School’s schedule of overseas visits.

Latin is taken by all pupils in 1st and 2nd Forms (Y7 and 8) for three periods per fortnight, following Book I and II of the Cambridge Latin Course. In the 3rd Form (Y9) and is an option at GCSE level, is also available as a Pre-Sixth course and an established IB option.

Greek has been offered as a co-curriculum activity to those who would benefit from it and as part of the IB programme, although numbers are small.

The Post

The successful candidate will be a well-qualified graduate who will be expected to support the Head of Classics in continuing to deliver a dynamic and innovative approach to teaching, whilst having the exciting opportunity within the department to explore and progress in his or her own way. The School regards the departmental co-curricular activities as very important and would welcome a candidate who would be willing to participate in these.

As well as a job satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment, we can offer a competitive salary, Teacher’s pension scheme, staff fee remission on School fees both at King Edward’s and our partner school Barrow Hills, free car parking, free us of gym, swimming pool and sports facilities all meals and snacks on duty and a Cycle to Work Scheme.
