CCA Curriculum

The curriculum is centred around core concepts which are sequenced in order to support students in every subject. Core concepts form the bones of the subject. These pieces of knowledge or skills unlock further learning. Core concepts are sequenced in such a way that students are supported to secure each essential concept before moving onto the next. These concepts are focused around a knowledge rich curriculum where students learn topics to a high level of depth to help them to tackle mastery of each subject discipline.

We prioritise the development of reading, writing and communication to support students to access new challenges in the curriculum as this is an essential element for success in our local context. Students have dedicated reading lessons, to enhance their reading skills and build a culture of reading. Students read for twenty minutes a day every day. Subject leaders work hard to build vocabulary and increase the number of opportunities for students to read in lessons, with at least one reading focused lesson per half term.

We recognise our young people as individuals, offering support and challenges to empower them to achieve their aspirations with a high standard of lesson content. Where students need further support they are provided with opportunities within our Remarkable Futures programme (which provides intensive support to students at risk of disengaging with education) or our Transition Curriculum (which provides an enhanced curriculum to accelerate the progress of students who join CCA with significant gaps in their learning).

CCA Enrichment Activities

We believe enrichment is a wonderful way to offer more “out of classroom” experience for our students across the year groups. We have devised a broad range of exciting and rewarding activities that will open doors to our students which will promote building and nurturing their personal development in a variety of areas including; team working, self reliance, confidence building and problem solving. The activities are designed to add an additional layer of learning to each CCA students offer in a fun and engaging way, which they decide what to participate in.

The goal of the Enrichment programme is to develop students in the following areas:

  • Self worth
  • Self motivation
  • Team work skills
  • Build a sense of purpose
  • Strengthen character
  • Embed confidence

Each year group across the Academy will have the opportunity to engage in these wonderful activities and year 11 will be intervention based to support our learners achieve the best results in their outcomes. Our sixth form learners will be deployed into the other activities to support and gain leadership experience whilst developing their own skills in the areas previously mentioned.

We welcome you to Clacton Coastal Academy (CCA).  The unrelenting focus by staff on the success, achievement, welfare and happiness of students has created a vibrant ethos and a school where students want to come every day.

Our aim is to achieve excellence through a full commitment to raising achievement within a framework of equal opportunities and inclusion has meant that we have developed a unique community ethos which is reflected in our statement of The CCA Way.

Our Vision is that The CCA Way leads to successful employment.  We are interested in the lifelong success of our students, not just what they achieve in their years with us. This means we want to ensure they achieve the very best qualifications and have a breadth of experiences so their CV is top of the pile.  We develop in them the confidence to speak well in an interview so they present themselves with great pride.  Then their experiences of working in groups, learning tolerance, problem solving and overcoming challenges, means that they are successful in their employment.

We are a caring community.  Focused individual feedback, which is essential for school development, is guaranteed to all students.  Our Study Hub provides additional support to students in all year groups should it be required.  Our Student Support Hub provides a single point of contact for parents and our extensive inclusion team support the pastoral needs of our students.

Curriculum

At the Clacton Coastal Academy we aim to ensure that every child ends up in successful employment. To that end we ensure that our curriculum creates opportunities for students to become independent and self-motivated with the ability to be responsible, determined and aspirational. All students are individuals who develop in different ways and at different rates and the curriculum is designed to meet those individual’s needs and provide appropriate technology, qualifications and experiences to support students into their chosen career pathways.

There are opportunities on the curriculum to accelerate (fast-track) or receive ‘booster’ or support lessons as appropriate. Students are set in most subjects as they progress through the academy but flexibility is built into the curriculum to allow movement between sets as the need arises.

Additionally, there are a variety of enrichment activities to enhance our curriculum. There are also various clubs (including in sports and artistic subjects) and there are Personal Development Days and Data Conferences in which lessons are collapsed to allow students to experience a deep learning experience that is challenging, inspiring and opens their minds to new experiences.

Our curriculum at KS3 is centred on the important Core curriculum areas of English, mathematics and science. Students will also study a variety of arts, humanities and languages subjects alongside the core curriculum. Year 9 students gain further transferable skills by choosing subjects to specialise in for the year and year 10 and 12 students begin on their choices for GCSE and A level study. It is our belief that this large discipline of all subjects helps our students to receive a strong traditional academic education, while also having time to find expression in the creative subject areas.

Values and Ethos

At Clacton Coastal Academy we follow "The CCA Way”.

We are Courageous Citizens, in a Caring Community who are Aspiring and Accountable.

This means:

As Courageous Citizens:

  • We try new things
  • We never give up
  • We celebrate the good and speak up when things are bad
  • We respect and listen to different views
  • We are committed to changing the perception of the local area

As a Caring Community:

  • We are approachable and friendly
  • We achieve more together than on our own
  • We ask for help if we need it, without fear of judgement
  • We respect our environment
  • We are proud to serve the community of Clacton

Being Aspiring and Accountable means:

  • We expect the best from ourselves and those around us
  • We are where we need to be, on time, ready for action
  • We go the extra mile
  • We are consistent, so everyone knows what to expect
  • We are proud to be a part of the CCA community

Our vision is that the CCA way leads to successful employment.

This means:

Our students are top of the application pile because the qualifications they have gained, the grades they have achieved and the additional experiences they have had including their understanding of the work place, gives them the most impressive application.

Our students are the most impressive at interview. They confidently look their interviewer in the eye and shake their hand. They can describe with passion the times they have worked in a team, taken on a challenge, led an initiative and made a change in their community.

Then when offered the job, they make employee of the month. They are so prepared for the workplace, they have learnt to be accountable, they have great aspirations and so they are a joy to employ. They enjoy their work. They are happy in their work and so they are successful in employment. Being successful in employment brings money into the household. Money in the household improves housing. Improved housing improves family life. Happy families impact generation after generation.

And so our courageous citizens, who’ve developed in a caring community, who’ve grown to be aspiring and accountable, impact the town of Clacton for generations to come. That’s The CCA Way.
