Job overview

‘everyone should have the opportunity to learn computer science at school and beyond...’

Sundar Pichai CEO of Google

The computing department at Arden is thriving, so we need a fifth person to join our team of specialist teachers. This is a new post, so we are able to offer a certain degree of flexibility. It could be a full or part time position; you could be a specialist in either of the two main subject areas or both.

As a school we are proud of the broad curriculum we are able to offer and the outstanding teaching that supports its delivery. The computing department are no exception to that.  Over the past few years, they have created a curriculum model that removes the pitfalls of traditional ICT, moving away from intermediate Microsoft PowerPoint, Publisher and Explorer to more dynamic lessons and teaching using the Google Suite.

At Key Stage 3, students develop a variety of skills that support progression into Key Stage 4; as well as wider knowledge and understanding of the life-skills associated with the use of IT.  At Key Stage 4 we are able to offer two pathways: GCSE Computing and Creative iMedia, with some students choosing to take both subjects. These subjects are hugely popular, which is the main driving force behind the need to grow the team. Once in sixth form the students again have choice, either the Extended Certificate in IT at Level 3 or A level Computer Science.

Arden pupils love to acquire new knowledge and skills; our teachers relish the opportunity to deliver engaging, challenging lessons to committed pupils. The computing department is often a hive of activity outside of lessons; our pupils are passionate about the subjects they study, particularly in Computer Science they like to take their learning beyond the scope of the syllabus. Our sixth formers are outstanding young people and a positive reflection of the school, many give up their time to support the younger years in lesson and we have several who continue their learning within computing at university or in industry.  In every way the Computer Science Department mirrors the aims and beliefs of the school.  All staff work hard, supported by a committed management team, to provide a safe and encouraging environment for learning.

We are looking for a Computing teacher that is keen to innovate, and will help build on the ambitious and rigorous curriculum that Arden offers.  The successful applicant will be able to teach across all key stages and the ability to teach A Level Computer Science is desirable.  As Arden is a teaching school this is an excellent opportunity for a newly qualified teacher to join a Trust with an excellent NQT training programme.

The school has a proven record of success at GCSE and A Level.  In summer 2019, 86% of pupils gained grades 9-4 in five or more subjects with over 87% of students also gaining a grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics (67% gaining grade 5 or above). The average progress 8 score is 0.46 and the attainment 8 score is 58.6.  Almost 40% of GCSE the grades awarded were grade 7 and an incredible 7% were grade 9.  At A Level over 97 % of the 2018-19 cohort achieved A*-E with over 25% of the grades at A*A. The Average Points Score per pupil is 34.7, giving an average grade per candidate of a C+.

Children of staff who are permanently employed at Arden Academy are eligible for a ‘staff’ priority for main school and Sixth Form admissions (please see Admissions on our school website for full details).

Opportunities don’t arise very often to teach at a school like Arden and we are delighted to be offering the chance for someone to join the department.

In return, we can offer you:

  • A positive and innovative learning culture supported by students, staff, parents and governors
  • Enthusiastic students who enjoy learning and engage positively in all aspects of school life
  • As a Teaching School, access to high-quality continuing professional development and the opportunity for personal growth and development
  • A collaborative and supportive attitude amongst staff which promotes a sense of teamwork and unity
  • A Senior Leadership team who is committed to promoting the best environment and outcomes for staff and students
  • Teacher Pension and a Cycle to Work scheme
