The King’s School, Gloucester, a co-educational HMC day School, is seeking to appoint a Teacher of Computer Science and ICT from 1 September 2018. Full or Part-time will be considered. 

This is an ideal opportunity for an individual to join a dynamic Maths and Computer Science department in a happy, thriving and forward-thinking school.  The successful applicant will be committed to providing high-quality, effective, pupil-centered learning and will be innovative and reflective, with a genuine interest in young people and how they learn. This post is suitable for experienced teachers as well as NQTs. 

Role

The Headmaster is looking to appoint a high achieving graduate to teach Computer Science and ICT within a highly successful Mathematics department. The current timetable allocation is 0.8 FTE due to the School’s transition from ICT to Computer Science. Computer Science is currently being taught at KS3, with GCSE Computer Science being introduced in September 2018 by the post-holder, who would also teach the final year of ICT at Y11 (Cambridge IGCSE ICT). The successful candidate will have a genuine enthusiasm for Computer Science and be well placed to generate and sustain a high degree of motivation and achievement in all pupils. It is anticipated that the post holder will lead the introduction of A Level Computer Science in due course, and there may be opportunities to teach at KS2, as King’s is a 3-18 Independent School. The ability to teach a second subject to Key Stage 3 or above for 2018-19 may allow the post-holder to undertake a full-time role, if preferred. 

The Department 

The Mathematics and Computer Science Department is an energetic, supportive and collegiate department. Whilst the post-holder would be the sole teacher of Computer Science and ICT for 2018-19, the Department teaches computational thinking within Mathematics lessons, and members of the department, as well as colleagues in the Physics Department, are experienced in programming. The post-holder will find their colleagues interested, supportive and positive about the role and importance of Computer Science within the curriculum. Computer Science and ICT teaching takes place in purpose-built ICT suites. Computer Science and ICT is a core subject at KS3, with Computer Science being an option at GCSE and A level. Extra-curricular activities in digital literacy, programming and cyber security are run by members of the Common Room and there will be opportunities for a successful candidate to contribute and develop these further. 

Timetable, induction and training

The School operates to a ten-day timetable cycle, consisting of 60 periods. Full-time members of staff teach 48 periods per cycle. Newly qualified teachers receive a 7 period remission in their first year for training and induction. 

Experienced applicants without formal teaching qualifications will be considered for this position. The King’s School has a strong record of training and developing teachers in situ, and there are opportunities for further development at every level. King’s supports unqualified teachers in achieving Qualified Teacher Status and the Post Graduate Certificate of Education qualification whilst working at the School, and the School is fully accredited to participate in the Independent Schools Teacher Induction Panel NQT Programme, and NQTs are provided with a comprehensive induction and mentoring programme which supports them in achieving qualified teacher status (QTS). For applicants without a teaching qualification we are looking for a high level of subject knowledge, enthusiasm, good communication skills, patience, an empathy with young people and a desire to get involved in the extra-curricular life of the School.
