Job overview

Teacher of Computer Science:

We are looking for a well-qualified and enthusiastic teacher, able to teach Computer Science at all Key Stages including A Level.

Parmiter’s aims to be at the leading edge of Computer Science teaching, offering a successful programme of discrete Computer Science lessons that develop skills transferable to other curriculum areas and, eventually, the workplace. The department is well-established; we pride ourselves on being subject specialists and teach in dedicated departmental teaching rooms. There is a team of 2 technicians, who provide excellent technical support to our department and the whole school.

The school has made a significant investment in hardware in recent years and all of the Computer Science classrooms are well equipped with up to date computers, interactive white boards and air conditioning.

The Computer Science Curriculum

Years 7 to 9

In Year 7, students are taught the skills of Digital Literacy and are introduced to Computer

Science. Digital Literacy ensures that students are able to use a wide range of software

applications effectively and efficiently.

In Years 8 & 9, Computer Science lessons teach the science behind computing as well as developing practical programming skills. Students study topics such as hardware, programming, binary and number systems. As a department we use Python for all programming in all key stages.

Digital Literacy skills are revisited and developed throughout Years 8 & 9. At Key Stage 3, all students are taught in mixed ability classes of 26/27 students

Years 10 & 11

For over 5 years we have offered AQA GCSE Computer Science in Year 10 and 11, achieving outstanding results year on year. This GCSE builds on their knowledge and practical ability from KS3, and provides a strong foundation for A Level study. We currently have 3 GCSE groups studying Computer Science in each of Year 10 and 11. It is proving an increasingly popular subject to study at Parmiter’s.

Sixth Form

For 7 years we have taught OCR Computer Science at A level, with a proven track record of outstanding results. Many of our students go onto study Computer Science at degree level, including a range of Computer Science related degrees at the UK’s top institutions. At Parmiter’s, all Advanced Level courses are taught as two year linear courses.

Extra-curricular Activities

Students in all year groups are encouraged to involve themselves in the various extra-curricular activities on offer. A rich programme exists, including a weekly lunchtime Programming Club (Junior Homebrew) run by our own 6th form for our lower school students. Year 8 students also have the chance to take part in a robotics day run by the University of Brunel. Each year, students take part in the national UK Bebres Challenge, which Parmiter’s has become very successful in. When possible we arrange trips to companies and higher education institutes; in the past this has included Imagination Technologies and the University of Hertfordshire.

The Good Schools Guide

Parmiter's School relocated to the current 60 acre rural Hertfordshire site from London's East End in 1977.  The site is currently undergoing a period of development and has recently opened a new £4m state of the art Science facility. The school enjoys a good reputation for traditional values and academic achievement whilst maintaining a true family feel among staff and students.

Experienced teachers, Early Careers Teachers and support staff benefit from a supportive leadership team who focus on personal development and wellbeing as a priority. Staff benefit from complimentary use of a new Fitness Suite facility.

Parmiter's leads the Watford Partnership for Teacher Training in collaboration with 11 local schools, the University of Hertfordshire and Herts for Learning.

The school is consistently over subscribed for Year 7 and Sixth Form entry.  Children of staff are a priority for admission.
