Job overview

We seek to appoint a qualified and highly motivated graduate to teach Computer Science throughout the School from September 2024. The Computer Science department at King’s is gradually expanding and increasing in popularity as a subject choice at GCSE and A Level.

This post is envisaged to be part-time in Computer Science but we are open to the possibility of combining the teaching with some in another department to increase the FTE.

There is some programming to be taught in the King’s compulsory Year 9 course, ‘Digital Curriculum’. The middle school (Years 10-11) study towards CIE 0478 (9-1) IGCSE Computer Science. There are currently two classes in each of these years of up to 17 pupils.

In the Sixth Form students work towards the CIE A level in Computer Science (9608). At GCSE level students currently program in Python and at A Level students program in Java with some work in Android Studio.

In addition to academic excellence, the school seeks to promote excellence in all its varied co-curricular pursuits. Teachers at King’s are expected to be fully involved in some capacity in this programme; for this role there is the possibility of teaching Computer Science only (0.5-0.70FTE) plus contributing to other areas of school life.

Full-time teachers are also required to contribute wholeheartedly to the pastoral care of the pupils, usually through taking on a tutor group and duties in one of the boarding or day houses (negotiable at interview for part-time appointments). 

The post is suitable for a person who is a fine communicator and who combines academic excellence, energy, enthusiasm and experience with good humour, administrative skill, patience, flexibility and tolerance. Applicants must be able to program to A Level standard (object-orientated programming); some experience of programming GUIs is desirable but not essential.

No experience of teaching is necessary; support and training is provided including a route to Qualified Teacher Status. Those finishing university courses are welcome to apply as well as those making a move from other careers.

Our family of schools comprises The King’s School, Canterbury (KSC), The Junior King’s School (JKS), and the International College, all in Canterbury, with an international school in Shenzhen opened in September 2019. At KSC there are over 860 pupils, split 50-50 boys-girls, of whom about 80% are boarders. There are six boys’ boarding houses, seven girls’ boarding houses and three mixed day houses. Junior King’s occupies a fine rural site on the banks of the River Stour, in Sturry, two miles from Canterbury. There are over 350 pupils at Junior King’s of whom 20% are boarders.

The King’s School occupies various sites around the Cathedral and its precincts. Many teaching departments and the majority of houses are in the beautiful ancient buildings around Green Court and Mint Yard on the north side of the Cathedral. To the east of the Cathedral the St Augustine’s Abbey site is home to five boarding houses, a medieval refectory, and the magnificent neo-Gothic school library containing over 30,000 items. There are two major sites for sport: Birley’s, and the Recreation Centre, both within walking distance of the school, with rowing at Westbere Lakes in Sturry. The King’s School Malthouse Theatre opened in April 2019 with a 350-seat auditorium, studios, teaching, dance and rehearsal spaces.
